Creating Soft-light Effects
In Photoshop open a RGB image.
Now under the Filter menu, under Render, choose Lighting Effects. [Don’t worry about all those sliding bars that are there]
On the very top of the dialog box you will see ‘Styles’; [these are all built in presets by Adobe.]
In 'Styles' you may choose ‘Flashlight’ [We will work with this for now and later you can practice on any on these preset styles]
As soon as you choose that, the little Preview Window will show you a circle with 4 points and glow in the center.
Click on the center point (inside the circle) and drag the light into the position where you want it. To make the circle a little larger, or smaller, click on one of the 4 side points and drag.
Click OK, and looks like you are done, but you are not.
Now go to the Menu bar in Photoshop and select Edit, and under that, ‘Fade Lighting Effects’. Here you can adjust the Opacity and see where you are most comfortable with the effects.
Now you are done! Save for TL and post; and don’t forget to share this with others.

I love this and will add it to my favourites. Thanks for the interesting note too :-) Lesley

Absolutely wonderfull result of well described technique, David. I really appreciate your effort and very good and uderstandable style of describing techniques in PS. I would not like to mess your nice shot by trying but I would be curious how this shot would look like without the framing, just the black BG or just the thin white strip 1 cm from the edge.
TFS a lot!

Hi David,
Nice softness, great idea and strong red colour! I like it very much! TFS

Kindly regards,
Ioana

Hi David, exceptionally nice floral picture. You pp came out very well. The pov is nice as well as your lighting used. Great dof. TFS.

Hi David, Nice photo, colour and contrast are good. Really good experiment. TFS

Thanks David for your helpful PP notes - I'm gonna look around for something to practice it on... It's a great way to hide a bad BG!

The rose is beautifully shown, hiding but peering out of the darkness. Thank you
Janice

Hi Sir

Thanks again for sharing another good work by you. This picture is looking so beautiful, colour and soft light in middle is so superb. I must learn so many things from your side.

kind regards

Once again David you provide a wealth of information to work with.
I enjoyed reading and looking at your WS on this, really like your finished image.
I don't have Photoshop, so I'll have to experiment a bit with Paint shop pro (when I get some spare time)
Thanks again for your time and sharing with us.

Namasteh David.
Mixed feelings here David. The rose itself is realy beautifull(WS original) and your explanation about PS is fantastic!

My problem here are 3,
1\the framing, maybe next time a neutral black frame with a very thin separating white line ..?
2\ The circle shaped lines inside are so noticeable..as we also still can see in the two
well tried WS's of *lgfoto*
I tried to do a WS but I had to say I also ended in the same problems as *lgfoto*
3\ Maybe a light pink..white or yellow rose would be a better option and for a 'soft light' photo a more light background.. Well just my thoughts.
Uesefull? I hope..
Greetings
John

Hi David,
I like this! Great colour and softness, contrasting nicely with the dark background. Think I might have tried for a different frame though, just a matter of taste. The notes are great too! TFS
Cheers Tina :-)
