My self-portrait for Vandana here!!!
I am the oldest and most honored turkey and the 'talk of the town'. Ok, I know
you think that I am a turkey!!!
Come this thanksgiving I will be...I think I forgot my age...its been too long
of a time.

In Hebrew the turkey is called tarnegol hodu (תרנגול הודו), which literally means "Indian chicken" Coincidentally, the Hebrew word for India (hodu) is a homonym for "thanks," contributing to a popular misconception that the word's etymology connotes "Thanksgiving chicken."
wikipedia]
Some say Christopher Columbus named turkeys "tuka," the Tamil word for peacock. Considering Columbus thought he was in India at the time of the alleged naming, not in the New World where he actually was, this definition seems fairly plausible. Another suggestion is that Luis de Torres, a physician who served under Columbus, named the bird "tukki," which translates to "big bird" in Hebrew. Some say the North American Indians called the bird "firkee." If so, it's a word everyone else has mispronounced the past 508 years. [The Wild Turkey Zone]

Hi David
Just a wonderful Self Portrait...
I have yet to get my mug out from behind the camera.... Very, Very brave I must day! LOL

Tricia

David,
What a great photo of an, wrinkled ugly looking bird. You have such good detail and clarity that each wrinkle and coarse hair stands out very well. With his dark feathers and the light it almost looks like he is wearing a dark suit. This is a funny photo, and so well captured. TFS

Hi David,
maybe try a good wrinkle cream ;-).
Not the prettiest bird but, but a great close up. Sharpness, colors and details are great.
Sky

Hi David,
The animal is perfectly portrayed here, I don't think it bears any resemblance with you -
I'd also like to add that if in English, these animals are called "Turkey", in French too, their names are, like in Hebrew, some connexion with India as we call the females "la dinde" (d'Inde) and the male, "le dindon"...
Your note about the link with America and Christopher Columbus is interesting.
(NB : thank you for your recent WS on one of my photos, it looks much better !)
Cath.
