Introducing my home town of Christchurch, viewed from the gondola complex at the top of the Port Hills.

With a population of around 350,000, Christchurch is the 3rd largest city in New Zealand (it's a small country!) and the largest metropolitan area in the South Island.

The Port Hills are a distinctive landmark to the south of the city, and form the rim of an ancient volcano - part of Banks Peninsula, once a volcanic island now embraced by the Canterbury Plains as part of the mainland.

These picnicers were packing up after enjoying lunch with a view.

Hello Rew,

not exactly a very nice view from this hill, but it sure is a good photo. Maybe I should have done another crop to accentuate more the ladies and the grass ? But that's a personal taste of course.

regards from Belgium,

Luc.

Well Rew the whole population of Tasmania is only 490,000 (not including the trees). I like it again. Well composed with good colour and light and what a view. Nice to include the ladies and the child.
My one and only trip to NZ I was going to fly into CC and my friend was going to drive down from Blenheim and pick me up. After flying into Wellington and then enduring a rather bumpy flight across the Strait I wish I had landed in CC. TFS,
David

Okay, Rew. You'll say I'm being a smart-a*s, but is this a photo of the women and child or of the city?! (Or the grass?) Hmmmmm.

Nice way to show off the view, I think, with the people in the foreground, but the view of the city itself is a bit muddy. I see you used a polarizer, so it must have been quite hazy that day. As far as the composition goes I would suggest considering lopping off some of the top, where the details of the city really disintegrate into indistinct haze.

In fact, I'll post a workshop with a more radical suggestion (though, if your goal is to show off the extent of the city, it won't work.) Just an idea. (Oh, and now reading through the other comments, maybe this is what Luc had in mind.)

Looks like a good climb. Best, -Hugh

I like NZ :) hope to visit again soon.. taken from a commanding location and ladies at the foreground make it joy to view.. thanks Rew..

Hi Rew,

what a view of CHCH, I know the photo is not super for a lot of the people, for me, a photo is not about the skills, not just about Composition or just pov but is also about what it make one think and feel and what they captured, etc.

I like it. The pov is excellent, it show the depth of the city.. all the way to the end where land and sky meet... the colours might need a bit contrast(well... you know... I like strong contrast...heheheh), great bonus to have the picnicers in the way and off center, what I like the most here is the atmosphere and the mood... :) it make me feel fresh air, feel how big the sky is and how little we are, make me feel free and wanting to scream my lung off (that's what everyone do when they are on top of the mountain right? :P lol.... o.k, o.k.... maybe I am staying at home for too long... but it is true of how I felt about this shot, hehehehehe hope you don't mind...:P and I said, you done well my friend, for captured the great wonderful atmosphere!!!

Thanks for sharing

Cheers,
Sweety

Hi Rew. Good overview of part of this wonderful city of the south. We lived there for a few years prior to moving to Aus. Fond memories of this sort of view and lack of crowded roads! The day is slightly foggy or not as clear as some days but the composition has plenty of ambiance. Good to see versatility in your work. TFS. Murray.

WOW! what a view!!! Like the personal interest here but much prefer this one to the ws. I like the hugeness of the perspective the haze making you think it goes on forever. Great picture. TFs

Oh, I do like Christchurch! Did a very quick trip there a couple of years back...Christchurch and Kaikoura. Remember listening to an amusing lunatic...The Wizard??

Andway, I think this is an unusual shot that works very well - and very different from a lot of your shots...I see more variety coming into your portfolio, Rew, and that's an excellent thing.

The foreground here would make a decent landscape image in its own right but to compose it like you have shows imagination and maybe some bravery - a risky posting, perhaps. But a good one - well done!

Hi Rew, I really like your POV on this shot. Love the spread out city in the background. Perfect crop as far as I am concerned.

Hi Rew,
I like the landscape, the mist on the city is good for the foreground but rather diturbing in the far distance where the details become invisible. I like your choice of showing the characters in the foreground as the city spreads down below.

Hi Rew, the cityscape from this high angle will only look like ordinary, but the people you framed here with the classic 1/3 rule has added on value, when we see this as we were also be there. Your metering worked well here, my only comment is if I could get some more grass at the bottom, that's all, cheers

Interesting motive Rew. Excellent composition. Well done. tfs. Stev

Very nice view and contrast of the women and child in peace and such a busy/chaotic labyrinth of streets so far behind them!

Stunning pov, my friend! I could get vertigo looking at this, it's so realistic! I would not change a thing! You've got it all! A top crop would ruin the feeling, and the inclusion of the human figures/action is well placed. You are breaking common pedestrian rules, and good for you! The arguments against your pov could also apply to Andrew Wyeth, one of the greatest realist artists of modern times.
Cheers
Otto

I dont care what anyone says, ask anyone from Chch and all say the same thing, the light and haze are more normal than not. Like our blue haze over here, she is one beautiful city. Must admit it has sort of grown since I left but I'll take a flying bet I could still fid my way around much of it. Well done Rew and thanks

If you have given this picture more grass foreground, I might say it is a scene from the "Sound of Music" where Julie Andrews sang "the hills are alive with the sound of music". I like your point of view, depth and composition.

PS: how did you get to Divisoria?

Hi Rew...certainly a panoramic view of this
town. Picnicers add a nice touch.
Nice comp.

Ursula

Hi Rew,
I like your POV and choice of composition.
The eye is drawn straight to the women but the background although very hazy has plenty of detail.
Regards, Roger.

This is such a breathaking view! Very high altitude, great pov! composition is nice too, good thing you included people in it, to make us see how grand the scale are... tfs rew.

jowel

Excellent composition & view of the whole the city.I think a night shot would be more beautiful. Can we have one next time & Tfs my friend:)
Mel

Great shot Rew! I really like the way you have included the two ladies & the child. It makes me realise just how big our beautiful city is. I can't quite make out if there's a game on at Jade Stadium or not. Anyways, I think it's a great photo, great POV! I know how hazy the city can look from the Port Hills & I say you've done a good job.
Well Done Rew.
GO The CRUSADERS!!!
