A couple of hours' drive from Lake Pearson and a winding drive across the South Island's main divide (turn left at Kumara junction) and you will arrive at Lake Mahinapua.

Typical of the Westland lakes but special to me I guess because my father grew up here, swimming in these waters as a kid in the '30s and '40s. The Coast is in my blood and I love its rugged wildness.

Unsure how to compose lake shots, as always any feedback is much appreciated.

PP - separated foreground from background to adjust levels and saturation (darkened foreground, lightened background.) Some crop, sharpening.

Lovely shot Rew, but the Coast has always been special. Funny how the lakes over there are totaly different to those anywhere else, ah well the light is different, the plants etc are the same as in other places but they seem to have different combinations over there. I give up, it is a place of its own and really neads to be seen as such. Nice one anyway.

Hi Rew

Hi Rew, I really must try and get back to NZ and see more than I did last time. I love this, well composed with all the divisions. Good colour and lovely detail. TFS,
Dave

Thanks for this post and your personal note, and this is so peaceful and beautiful...I was going to ask about fishing..but will skip it for now:)
I really like your framing and how you have given it a wonderful perspective by including those rocks
David

Beautiful picture of the gorgeous landscape. I think there is a touch too much on the bottom but that's just nit picking at a beautiful picture. Love all the layers. Gotta visit there someday myself! TFS

Interesting to read your notes Rew, so were you born down that way ?

Unsure how to compose lake shots you say... hhhmmm well, I think you did a darn good job, having interest in the FG, middle and BG...

I just feel you should have used a higher F stop number, as you can see the trees in BG are not sharp... but maybe this is what you are wanting?.. I dont think so, not for Landscapes.

The colours are a true West Coast day...

Its always great to visit the areas of our Parents... I enjoy that... one does feel it deep inside.

Cheers Dawn.

Hello Rew,

Excellent shot... I like the different "layers", especially the low pov, looking great, creating a relaxing mood.. like you are sitting down and having a picnic.. :P well done, thanks for sharing,

Cheers,

Hi Rew, your composition is good. I like all your many different levels here - sky, trees, water, reeds, water, flax, grass, rocks, and even more grass!! (Maybe the latter could have been cropped out, but I actually like it as it is.)
Very well captured, and the place and colours look very peaceful and true.
Good job!
Janice

Hi Rew,
Nice shot and good at light using. It followed law of perspective. I like it. Welldone!

Comp is great, forground bit sunny background bit grey, hard to control the weather and lighting thou, great shot.

Workshop pic is great nice comp POV and light

I really like the layering of the composition here coupled with the atmospheric perspective (something used often in later Renaissance painting, but I am using it here to apply to photography too ;P) that tells gives balance between the dark, duller greens in the background at the top with the brighter greens in the foreground at the bottom. The vertical framing and cropping works perfectly with this, and compliments the horizontal layering. This really fits the rule of thirds, and the contrasts and exposure are really good, although maybe I would do a tad of burning on some of the rocks in photoshop. You have really captured the diversity and ruggedness of the landscape that you admire so much. And that is the beauty of photography, of art, is that it allows us to express to others our feelings, thoughts, and likes and dislikes when words are not enough (okay that was probably cheesy but you get my point ;P). Oh, and I like the softness of those gray clouds at the top to contrast with the trees and water. Nature seems to bring out the best in people, I find. TFS!
P.S.: these Maori names bring a smile to my face because they sound a lot like the Hawaiian names I became familiar with when visiting Oahu and the Big Island ::sigh:: memories...

Hi Rew,
Interesting vertical landscape shot! I like how your photo can be divided into different "stripes"! I made a WS for you, how I'd change it my way! :) It's not a big change though! I hope you don't mind! I recommend using a polarizing filter even diffuse lighting... to make a bit contrast!
Keep on shooting landscapes, Rew... your country is beautiful!
cheers

Hi Rew,
LOve your note Rew. Simple, as simple can be and demonstrates that its best to keep things as basic as possible. Excellent contrast working so well over here. The green stretch in front is a wonderful addition.

Hi Rew,
I like the way this landscape is built from layers, grass/water/reeds/water etc. it is very effective and has created a very well composed image.
Your PP has worked to improve a good image to start with. Well done.
Regards, Roger.

Nice places Rew. Pretty shot. Well done. Tfs. Stev

Hmm ... first of all you made a brave decision to make a vertical landscape, but this is a good choice if nothing else you can see more challenging than this. Normally in vertical framing you would like to see some layering and Rew, you have captured these layers well (sky, trees, water, reeds, water again, grass, rocks). Unfortunately (and this is when we deal with nature, you can't predict the weather), the sky color sometimes is not what we want it to be, in this case, it is dull. I posted a WS here just to see if I could bring up some contrast back using a simple gaussian blur technique. Oh, one more thing Rew, in landscape it is best to shoot with small aperture (big f number) to get details of background. Cheers, ari

Hello Rew,
A lovely lake, well framed!
Seems like a peaceful rural scenery, and the image is well composed with a fine feeling of depth...
Personally I use landscape format for this kind of scenery, hehehe... But this is all right!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Rew

Excellent control of DOF. Do you use manual mode at all?
I would love to see you use a SLR and make the most of it, I am sure you will do wonders with one.

Rew,
A lot of detail attract eyes. Very nice reporter picture about this place. It seems to be an nice place to rest.
Kind regards.
Lybil

Hi Rew! Very nice scenery. I love the foreground w/ the rocks and vivid greenery, and as the color value tones down as it gets farther and farther. I like how you framed the elements. TFS,
Freddie :)
