[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I am just back from a trip to Mexico and posting some images... I added a color version of this on my TE site.

This is taken from the Laguna de Sayula in Jalisco, Mexico. It's a mostly dry lakebed, except when enough rain accumulates -- usually in the summer. The dried surface is made of salt material and cracked earth, with some grassy patches, as seen here.

The lakebed forms a large, regional basin around which various towns were built over the centuries. It still provides a stopover for migratory birds and hosts diverse species, although the effect of runoff, nearby highway construction, climate changes, and other human uses have led to environmental degradation.

For this photo, I'm facing south, with the sun rising to my left. In the foreground are grasses and vegetation that form part of a wetlands ecosystem. Most of this year this lakebed is dry, but occasionally in the summer and other rainy times, enough water accumulates here.

In the distant background is the peak of the Nevado de Colima, not an active volcano in recent memory -- although its neighboring twin, not visible in this shot, is Mexico's most active volcano.

There's a blog (in Spanish) where people exchange information on climbing this peak.

Really interesting shot that I think is daring because while it is a landscape shot it is very simple and it also focuses a lot on the vastness of the wetland ground. You can really sense the dry, grassy textures of the lakebed with all the clarity and detail in the shot. And really good use of sunlight with the POV used, I am amazed at the detail captured, especially with your aperture wide open like that. I find that, even though there is a lot of ground left in the foreground of the shot, there is good balance between the lovely volcano in the background, the hazy sky, and the ground. The desaturation makes the shot unique as well as captures a somewhat melancholy mood, giving the message that the lakebed is being slowly destroyed by human activity and pollution. I also love how the upper corners are a little darker than the center of the shot. TFS!
