The Str. Kaye E. Barker starts another trip leaving from Marquette Michigan headed to Detroit MI to the Severstal Steel Mill in River Rouge. This photo was taken in Lake Superior about 3 hours after leaving Port and about 9 hours from the Soo Locks, it takes 12 hours from Marquette Michigan to the soo locks. This ship is one of only 2 steamers left in the fleet, with a diesle engine conversion in her future. The Kaye Barker before lengthened and the addition of the self unloading boom was once the flagship of the once prominant Cleveland Cliffs Steamship Co. as the Edward B. Green.

I took a trip onboard the Kaye Barker from june 14-23, this is the first of many photo's i will post of the trip, we went from Marquette Michigan to Detroit River Rouge, Toledo OH, Muskegon MI, Escanaba MI, Indiana Harbor(near chicago, 3 steel mills cramped into a man made harbor) then back to marquette.

The weather in this photo was sunny, calm, warm and hazy out

Note, its a little off center i know but i had to do this, because the bow thruster pipe ran along the enter of the forward cabins so it was either have it a little off center or have a blig black line in the right side of my photo

The dull if not non existant horizon in this shot is interesting. The wake and the other shapes created by the hull interacting with the water are another interesting feature of this picture coupled with the mass of the ship.

This picture is another journey to a world most of us have no contact with. Thank you for posting this it allows us to go where you go and see things we do not see in our existance.

Great shot. Very striking. Look forward to seeing more from the trip.
Love the ladder. Seems a bit surreal having a ladder and a car tyre propped up in the middle of the ocean.
Never having been on a vessel like this it clearly shows what vast objects they are,
Great...tfs

Hi Sam
What a wonderful photo of the Kaye...
Hope to see more photos soon
Color and details.. perfect :)

Hope you had a great trip

Tricia

very cool framing and perspective sam :)
it seems the ship is stretching into the distance :)

Great picture Sam.
Fantastic POV and composition. Water texture is very interesting and it looks a bit dramatic without visible horizon.

Terrific shot! Great perspective and contrast, beautiful rich colours!
Thanks for the interesting note...
Best regards,
Izabela

Almost surreal in the surroundings here Sam - the way the sea and sky merge towards the horizon is amazing. The size of the ship, evidenced from this POV, is breathtaking - very impressive work!
Perhaps you could have cropped it very slightly to bring the left-hand edge of the ship in from the corner, to mirror the right hand side - but otherwise I think composition works well here.

That's a very original shot, good idea. Well done.
Regards, Krzysztof.

Fantastic. I Love the perspective, and the horizon blending into the sky.
