This old snag stands on the lip of a cinder cone created by volcanic action many thousands of years ago. This lava butte in part of the National Park system and is location is just south of Bend, Oregon.

Wikipedia:
Lava Butte is a cinder cone located in central Oregon, USA, just west of US Highway 97 between the towns of Bend, Oregon, and Sunriver, Oregon. About 500 ft (150 m) tall, it is part of a system of small cinder cones on the northwest flank of Newberry Volcano, a massive shield volcano which rises to the southeast. The cinder cone is capped by a crater which extends about 60 ft (20 m) deep beneath its south rim, and 160 ft (50 m) deep from the 5,016 ft (1,529 m) summit on its north side. Lava Butte is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

PP: This RAW image was exposed vor the the sky but with Nikon Capure NX I was able to bring up the foreground.

hi there, neat shot, interesting mound of earth! great composition, i do find the sky a little washed out(maybe its my moniter!)
its a very nice and interesting image still
thanks for sharing
scott

reaaly nice composition and good POV

i just saw a bit less contrat between sky and land.

I post a worshop, hope you like it.

Regards Olivier

Nice hot sky with the distant cones set against it. I used to travel out there a lot before retirement. Evidence of volcanic activity everywhere. Cooled lava that sometimes looked like big chunks of dark chocolate. I like the old snag being replaced by the new growth trees which may in turn become old snags. Well done. Reid

Hi Dad

Nice shot. The deep reds of the volcanic rock are captured quite well. The green of the trees offer a nice contrast with the reds. A fine composition as well with the foreground tree in just the right place.

As a few others have noted the clouds are little blown out. I imagine it would be really hard to manage the range of light here without a ND grad filter or blending multiple exposures in PS. Looks like you have a spec on your sensor it shows up just to the right of tree.
I noticed you got a Tokina. Welcome to the world of ultrawide. I know you will love the lens.
