[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I much enjoy watching swans, they are so beautiful and graceful. Black swans like this one are native to Australia. Their existence was first reported back to Europe by the Dutch explorers to Australia in the 17th century. Until then people in Europe had believed that all swans were white. I also read that for about 1500 years Europeans regarded ‘black swans’ as a metaphor for something that couldn’t possibly exist.

Surprising to me, black swans inhabit both fresh waters and salt waters. They measure between 106 and 140 cm in height with a wingspan of almost 2 metres. They mate for life and can become as old as 40 years.

Here in Australia the black swan is incorporated into the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, the Coat of Arms of Western Australia and the Coat of Arms of the city of Canberra, Australia’s capital. In the latter both a black swan and white swan appear, symbolising the Aboriginal and European races.

Finally, the Nyungar people, Aboriginal Australians from the State of Western Australia, believe that their ancestors were once black swans who became men.

Absolutely super swan portrait, Cordelia...the clarity of the eye is just wonderful and makes a super contrast, aliong with the beak, to the rest of the shot. Well captured.

Sometimes I really feel wonder how beautiful is the nature. And artist has an eye to find that beauty, capture it and then share with others. An excellent close up of a magnificient swan. Black and Red is the "Rock" combination by the nature. Excellent shot my friend, well done.

This is a very 'different' shot! At first I perceived the b/g as sky, then realised it was water! It all sort of shifted! I think it is remarkable for its composition, its incredibly sharp detail and its strong vibrant colours. Very interesting notes too!

COnsidering the température of the place... We can be surprised they choose the be black... It receive much more heat from the sun...
But they are on the water... Probably they don't care :)

Cordelia, you just made my day!!!

These Black Swans were indeed discovered by Dutch explorers some 400 years ago! < the Batavia? > And the Swan River is likely named after them and that event!

A few years back I had the privilege of seeing them close to Perth, WA! It was amazing! And of course the goslings are golden downy!
