As an archaeologist, my interest in the walled old city of Jerusalem stems from the quantity and quality of relics & features available for study. Although much of it is hodge-podge, there is a representation of each cultural landscape that existed in the area right up to the present day.

But the prevailing feeling that I have is a deep fascination of its street life and how every feature of its architecture reflects its multicultural and often violent history.

I've long forgotten the name of the street in the image, but fair to say it lies in the Christian quarter just off the Via Delarosa. I'd taken an unexpected turn into an area I hadn't visited before. As is usual with the unexpected I saw a beauty in the curvature of the steps and the shadow cast by the wall at right.

During the hot hours of the day the walls are usually bleached by the sun, but here close to evening there is a golden glow which brings out the textures and tones of the ancient street.

Originally a 35mm photo, I've scanned and downsized the image for TL.

Hello Celine! Mysterious stairway! Good sharp. Very good colors. Wonderful perspective. Good work. Greetings from Poland!

Wow - I would love to go and see this place!
Lovely details - the more you look into this picture there is more to see!
The plants growing out of the walls... the wires crossing the stree... the person sat leaning up against the building - fantastic!
Ans the curve of the street really draws your eye into the picture - lovely capture :)

Hi Celina,
I like your POV of this old street in Jerusalem . These old architecture impress me much . Your vertical plan and the steps gives perspective and a kind of three dimension . Thanks for sharing .

A real sense of history here, fascinating work. Good POV and sharpness, good metering and saturation. Never easy to get a sense of everything being "right" when perspective and parallel lines come into conflict, but you have managed it extremely well.
Well done and thank you for sharing

A spectacular image, Celina, and a fascinating note. I love the lines in the blocks and the curves in the steps and the shadows. Good play between light and shadow throughout the shot.
All the best,
Karen

What a discovery, full of character and experience, with wonderful details and textures holding all its history! Amazing clarity for a scan, and terrific light for some useful shadow effects. Seeing the person sitting along the steps adds a poignant touch, and perhaps a story to tell:) Superb catch!

A great street shot of a very historical place Celina. How wonderful that you are able to bring out the colour of the building. WELL DONE!!
