With this photo I am starting a mini series within my travelogue on the villages Gardenstown, Crovie and Pennan. All three are villages located below the cliffs along the north facing Aberdeenshire coast.

Gardenstown is the largest and the most stable of the three villages: though it still clings in the unlikeliest of ways to niches in the cliffs along and above the bay. Originally known as Gamrie, Gardenstown was founded in 1720 by Alexander Garden specifically as a fishing village. On the hillside to the west, and visible from most parts of Gardenstown, are the remains of the Church of St John the Evangelist. This predates the village, being built in 1513, and celebrates an even earlier event, the defeat of the Danes here in 1004.

By the 1920s Gardenstown and Crovie together housed around 250 fishermen and 50 fishing boats were based here. This number declined over the following years in the face of competition from the larger and more effective vessels that could operate from other ports.

Gardenstown grew at Crovie's expense after the great storm of 31 January 1953. This washed away the path between the villages together with stretches of Crovie's sea defences, and a number of houses and sheds. Crovie ceased to be viable almost immediately, and many residents moved to Gardenstown.

Gardenstown has tended to grow upwards. The oldest cottages and other buildings are next to the sea, while newer additions are layered up the cliffs, culminating with the new housing and development that has taken place on the level ground above the cliffs. This steady growth has helped ensure a continuity of services and as a result Gardenstown continues to be a living and thriving village.

As you can see, it was a rather grey and rainy day, but that also had its advantages. No tourists and nice soft light. Unfortunately we arrived with low tide, which didn't gave me much surf to work with. Fortunately it did allow me to venture on the rocks and capture the area form a different vantage point, which you will see soon, or which can be seen here: Gamrie Bay

Yup, I know the exposure data are not what I normally have. Looks like I rushed it.

Hi Niek!

I'm impressed by the elaborated notes concerning the village as well as the technical aspects of your picture. I like very much when you say that the advantage of a rainy day is the fact that you are alone... I'm often out in the nature when the other people are sitting in their living-room.

:-)

I like the atmosphere of that grey and rainy day. It's peaceful and somehow melancholic. And it's once again the proof that bad weather doesn't exist, there's just weather...

Markus

Hi Niek,
Just another lovely view, excelent colors and contrast between the sky and the hills, and the white houses make the composition complete. Thanks!
Mihaela

Niek,
Wow, what a beautiful POV. It's scary how those houses are so close to the banks.
I am okay with the hazy sky but some great blue sky and some white puffy coulds would have been great.
I think you did as well as you could here. The water on the right corner makes this composition very interesting. The bankline texture seems to go well with the patterns of the mountains. I'd love to see this in person.
Well done my friend,
Scott

Hi Niek, you have managed to convey a good feeling of this place.
The colours are natural, the grey sky sets the mood for the scene. The rocks in the f/g add to the scene.
Good POV.

Hello Niek, this is a good composition and you've captured it well for typical Scottish weather! I think this would be very nice with some early morning sun on it. Did you do any work on the clouds as they seem to be too smeared out for 1/4000?

Nice work!

Hi Niek,
I love that composition. The ambient light give a very smooth aspect. Those houses seem to vanish in the mountain. The green of the grass give a lead in your photo. Well see !

Hi Niek,
At first glance I thought it was a Scandinavian sight.
Again you share with us a superb photo.

Hello Niek,
The naked landscape where larger vegetation is hardly seen, broken by the houses in humble colours...
A bit strange but still beautiful scenery, good point of view and well composed!

Hi Niek

You have captured some stunning detail in this shot, from the textures on the hills, the FG rocks and the houses in the middle. Wonderful exposure and great composition.

I'm loving your Scottish adventures
