[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Compiled from 4 photos of different exposures. There are various methods and programs used to combine these types of photos, but I found a method that works quite well and that does not require manual area selections.

Method (using Gimp):

1. Make each exposure a layer, with the darkest layer on top and lightest on bottom. (The darkest layer should have no overexposed areas.)
2. Select magic wand tool.
3. Select the feather edge option and increase edge length.
4. Select a black area of the photo. (This should select most of the photo, leaving only tiny spots that would be overexposed in a normal single photograph. The exact area and colors selected, depending on the image, can be manipulated using the threshold option of the magic wand tool.)
5. Add a layer mask.
6. Bucket fill your selection with black (transparency).
7. Repeat process for other layers.
8. Look at the final product and edit as necessary. (Should not require difficult manual work.)
9. Apply "unsharp mask" to increase clarity without changing photo quality.
10. Enjoy your photo!

Wow! That large scale photo is very impressive indeed. Great details and clarity and you've written a wonderful not on the techniques you used.

Great stuff all round, well done!
