Charolais bull

Another picture from my holiday in France. This one I took on the day we visited Bazoche. This is a Charolais bull, and we did see a lot of the Charolais cattle during our vacation in France.
From the internet:
The Charolais cattle came from the west central and southeastern parts of France, in the old provinces of Charolles and Nievre. This explains how the breed got its name. Exact specifics of their origins are still unknown, but it is logical to think that the breed developed from cattle in that area. The first recordings of the breed are from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when this breed was well known and highly favored in the French markets, particularly those of Lyon and Villefranche. However, some reports and articles say that evidence shows the breed existed as far back as 878 A.D.
The breed became very popular in Europe. Farmers and cattle producers began breeding these cattle and increasing heard sizes. As I read in one article, a cattle producer loved the breed so much that he moved his cattle with him from Charolles to Nievre back in 1773. The cattle did very well there.
The attraction to this breed is often very obvious. They are very large in size and have excellent muscling. The Charolais have a sound bone structure and great power. The French breeders stressed rapid growth and cattle that would ultimately reach a large size. The Charolais of France are white, horned, long bodied, good milkers, and have a general coarseness to them. |
