| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Isla del Sol is an island in the southern part of Lake Titicaca. The origin of the word is unknown but many think that it's a corruption of "Titi" (puma) and "Kala" (rock). Artcheologists have discovered that people lived here as far back as the 3rd millenium B.C. There are over 180 Inca ruins on the island, most dating from the 15th century. According to the Inca religion, the sun and moon were born here. Today the island is home to about 800 families. The little boy in the photo is sitting beside an inca "aquaduct" of artesian well water. According to tradition, one should drink from it before leaving the island in order to assure a safe journey. It's ill-advised to drink tap water in Bolivia, but this water is not only potable but delicious. And, what's more, my boat didn't sink on the way back to Copacabana! |
