The Battle of Culloden (Scottish Gaelic: Blŕr Chůil Lodair) (April 16, 1746) was the final clash between the French-supported Jacobites and the Hanoverian British Government in the 1745 Jacobite Rising. It was the last battle to be fought on mainland Britain. Culloden brought the Jacobite cause—to restore the House of Stuart to the throne of the Kingdom of Great Britain—to a decisive defeat.

The Jacobites—most of them Highland Scots—supported the claim of James Francis Edward Stuart (aka "The Old Pretender") to the throne; the government army, under the Duke of Cumberland, younger son of the Hanoverian sovereign, King George II, supported his father's cause. It too included significant forces of Highland Scots, as well as Scottish lowlanders and English troops.

The aftermath of the battle was brutal and earned the victorious general the name "Butcher" Cumberland. Charles Edward Stuart eventually left Britain and went to Rome, never to attempt to take the throne again. Civil penalties were also severe. New laws attacked the Highlanders' clan system, and highland dress was outlawed

Beautiful scene and mood. Excellent colors and composition. My only complaint would be that you didn't use the whole 800px allowed so it is kind of small.

TFS,
David

This is an amazing image Robin!
The colours and tones are awesome, you can sense the age in the scene.

Great note to go with a great image.

TFS, Gary

I think this would make a great Christmas card. Very relaxing scene with the thatched roof, greens of nature, stone home, etc... The dusting of snow adds that great winter touch. Awesome!!

Hello, Robin.

I like this one, though I do think I prefer your "Well of the Dead".

You haven't given us any details of the technicalities of the photograph, apart from exposure details: is this an HDR image? I just wonder about that because the sky is so dark and, because you have no Exif data, I'm not sure what time of day this was taken. If it is an HDR image, you have done very well to capture the dark and sombre mood of this place: if not, you have been very fortunate to have such wonderful lighting on the day.

Culloden really is a wonderful place to visit, isn't it? Even though the battle was over 250 years ago, yet it is still a hauntingly sombre and peaceful place to be.

Excellent!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello Robin, this shot oozes history.
The notes are an excellent accompaniment.
The dark dramatic sky just fits with the idea of battles etc,.
Very good composition and colour.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Great! I have to take a trip to this place
