[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It's officially snake season here in Southern California. The Rattlers have awakened from their winter slumber and they're on the move. The rains have made our area a cornucopia of wildlife this year.

The Rattlesnakes play an important role in preserving the ecology of the area. They keep the rodent population at bay. But they are not the rulers of the bush . . . they have to be careful of King Snakes which like to eat them . . . and the big hawks.

I kept my distance and allowed this fellow to cross!

yip - quite a handful that critter when he mad or cornered. Considering the length of it, you didn't have many options to present it here. Good work. Tim

Hey David,
Nice shot of this rattler. Yeah keeping your distance was a good idea.
Speaking of big hawks or just hawks, I was on my way home from work driving through the campus and passed by this small wooded area and I saw something quickly swoop down and up and by god this hawk just grabbed him/herself some snake dinner. I had my camera right next to me...in its case....Then I went on to thinking maybe I should just wear this camera around my neck at all times. Probably still would of missed the shot it was so quick and on its way. Anyway, thought I would share that with ya.
Looks like the pattern and scales on the rattler really had a problem through the compression. Lots of small intricate detail there so go figure. Good work and glad your safe.

Michael

Well, that's one good reason to live in the Northern climes! We don't get snakes like that. Good capture!

Good picture! Didn't try some macro of it head? Hissshhh! I'm not afraid of the snake but not crazy :o) Good shot!

Unusual shot coming from Tsumeb! Interesting but a bit scary! Nice shot, though! We can feel the movement of the snake....

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!
I wouldn't be able to do anything if I see a snake being free in nature. The only time I saw one in Italy I couldn't move my legs and arms for seconds.

Great shot! I like the light next to the snake.

Nice capture David, well nice escape anyway. Great to see one in the flesh so to speak. Glad you survived the encounter, but nice to see nature as it should be in the wild. TFS.

Peter

Hummm, I would have to have camera with a huge zoom to be able to take this photo...
You are a brave man!
Ana

;p]
