Dear Friends,

some of you may know this flower some im sure don't.. This majestic flower have so many names. Queen of the night, Dutchman's Pipe, Midnight Bloom, etc.

But to us in South East Asia there is a legend and myth behind this Bunga Bakawali name in Malay. However, it is called Epiphyllum Oxypetalum in Scientific terms. With an intoxicatingly extravagant fragrance, it will only bloom once, in the mysteriously unpredictable dark coldness of the night. A trait that makes this most rare flower only more obscured in Malay myths and superstitions. It started to bloom at 8.00 pm and fully bloom at 12.00 midnight.. after midnight it will slowly fading and totally close (dead) at 3 am.

so far this year this is only the one in bloom.. big in size too actually its pure white but in my camera the Bakawali look a bit yellowish in some part.

Hope you like this. thanks for looking.

cheers, terry

This is brilliant Terry. I always adore white flowers and you have darkened the background perfectly to show the details of the inside. Good shadow management to see those fragile petals which is rather difficult with whites. Stamens are sharp too.

Pandainyerrr...

Hola Terry,

Adhan.

Hello Terry,
AHA...we call this flower as "Bramha Kamal". B/c as per Hindu mythology this flower generates from the naval of Lord Bramha (creator of world).
Very nice capture of this delicate flower.
Sharp and well composed. TFS

Thanks for the flower Terry .. it is apreciated.. {@_@}
Welldone .. since often we do not see details in the white ranges .. due to overburn..but you handled well!
I also go along with you about the green leave left top.. but the little yellowish/pinkish sort of ? leave is a little disturbing ..or is it me..? NOT at all has it an impact on the photo.. that is VERY nice!!
Bye
John
ps
Flu all gone?!?

WOW Terry, and you took this picture just before midnight - how wonderful for you to see it.
What a beautiful flower.
Tell me, do any insects come along and germinate it? What use is the flower? Does it have seeds or how does it multiply? Or does the plant die too after it flowers? Some plants do die after they flower once.
Lots of questions, sorry, but it seems such a waste, and I am so pleased you went to see it this week so you could share it with us.
Janice

Hello Terry,

Hello Terry,
an excellent subject delivered here. A white flower which is hard to render well. A very crisp and clear subject. Besides being symmetrical, the dark BG make the flower stands out.
Beautiful and interesting subject to discuss too - cause this flower is quite refrred to in Malaysia.

Regards,
Foozi.

hello terry,
What an amazing flower and you have captured it so well with the colour and detail.
A real gem. The stamens are so unusual.
Take care, Joni

Hi Terry, a real queen which i did not see before. The central part's structure is just amazing. Perfectly focused and composed macro MF!
TFS and cheers,
Bayram
