Synopsis: My friend and fellow treklens member Abid Changezi (athlon) gave me a macro lens to try.. its a Vivitar made 100mm macro lens... i brought it home, 'tried' it and threw it in the closet... that was a month ago...

...until i took it back out yesterday, only this time, i tried it in the camera's manual mode, only to find out that all this time i had been missing out on such a wonderful lens!!

since this website is for learning photography, i will try to focus on how i took this shot...

Acting: placed the watch on an ironing table, with a black fabric underneath... mounted the camera on my trusted manfrotto tripod and set the ISO to 100, the camera was programmed to shoot in RAW mode in black and white...

i wanted there to be complete edge-to-edge sharpness, for that reason, i chose an aperture of f/22! as a result, i got a shutter speed of five seconds, which you can also tell by looking at the seconds hand on the watch itself :)

later, it was post processed in Nikon Capture NX where i boosted the levels and contrast a little, but nothing too fancy...

my only gripe is, there is a harsh, ugly shadow forming in the dial, and the reflection in the dial is preventing us from seeing the text that reveals the manufacturer's name...

we live in a world full of imperfections... and this is a great example of that... but the thing is, i've titled this photo as 'Part I', so there will be a part II tomorrow inshallah, where i will address the reflection issue using an in-camera technique :)

thanks for viewing, let's see what you think :)

Hi Muhammad,
Do not despair, that crown logo is globally recognisable :) What a beautiful macro shot though! Black and white is very effective here. The cold metal and glass textures are emphasised. Very nice composition, the geometrical lines and shapes are wonderful. Perfect light and contrast. Just a little trivia for you, in watch ads the watch time is almost always set to 10:10 - maybe you should try it! Well done.

Nicely done. I just love 5 secondes exposure time indication in the photo.:) Very creativ. Wonderful lighting and result. Thanks for sharing, regards, Jean.

great macro, and it's nice of you to actually describe the process of obtaining it. Nice job,
Thank you for sharing,
Ioana

What a great and thorough note. Actually I like that we barely see the watch brand! We live in a world of commercials, brands and fashionistas...so thanks for being ackward this time ;)
Well done!
Pris.

Hi Muhammad,

Beautiful photo! I like the black with silver. It is a great contrast. The little ugly thing with the reflection is a little bit disturband but funny at the same time.
Great macro of a beautiful watch.

TFS Greetings Simone

My dear Muhsin,
Reading your wonderful story, I am reminded of Imran series by Ishtiaq Ahmed which I was so fond of reading in my younger days. He always kept us engaged at the end of one of the book so we crave for more in the next one. I will log on to treklens tomorrow only to see what is new in store for us from the MUHSIN STUDIOS.

Wonderful work my friend. Who says you cannot capture time. You have captured 5 seconds passing by on the watch and that is the perfect. I dont care about any other imperfections. Wonderful work. I will wait for the second part.
