Well, well, well...

Actually I hate portraits of MYSELF. Don't know why, but looking into MY own face makes me feel dizzy. Maybe this is one of the main aspects, why I prefer taking photographs instead of getting photographed...

Tech-Talk

This shot was taken with two halogen spots to the right and left of the cam, 500W each pointing directly onto my face. So you can create a very 'hard' picture. where every (unwanted) detail of your face can be seen. Additionally there is a good chance of overexposure (look at the cheeks).
Next there are a few steps to take to create that 'dark' look...

1. Work on the WB, becaus those spots create a very hard and cold light.
2. Optimize the histogram, so there is a good black and a white, too
3. Shifted Gamma to 0.7
4. To put special strength onto marks, scars, beard, spots and so on change the color-picture into a b/w one by fooling around with the channel mixer. It helps keeping in mind, the blue channel is the best choice (so reduce red and green)
5. Extend contrast by applying a s-curve to the histogramm
6. Finally sharpen hard, really hard :)

ok, now lets get a background

7. I worked with masks so I created an empty layer to play with.
8. Applied filter -> Render -> Clouds (repeat until you like the clouds)
9. Applied filter -> Unsharp --> Wind 90° (hell, I am not sure how the filter is called in english - but I am sure u know what I am talking about)
10. Applied filter -> Unsharp --> Wind 0°
11. Applied filter -> Smudge (other similar filters work, too)
12. Finally I added some grain and other oddities to create a non-smooth bg

Good on you for doing this self portrait Gunnar, not always the easiest thing to do, and to set it all up etc...one must have plenty of patience... most of us dont like our own portraits.. specially when we are getting older.. ekkk..but you being young..you dont have to worry... technically a good shot here I feel. Maybe a softer look in your eyes would be nice for next time...just a thought.

Otherwise great colour selection and crop..I like it.
