Snowy Owl Female (Bubo scandiacus )

This is a female Snowy Owl.They migrate into this region in the Winter months from the Arctic area. This one perches on a utility pole that I pass by almost everyday.I have many photos of it on top of the pole, but this day I managed shots of it in the field below. The area is very flat and is crop land in the summer. In the Winter it resembles the flat, snowy tundra regions this owl would inhabit.
Perching on top of a 70ft utility pole gives the bird a clear vantage point to defend her territory from other owls, and keep an eye and ear on the terrain for rodents to prey upon. This owl eats from 10 - 15 voles or mice a day.Snowy owls are diurnal, probably because it is daylight in the Arctic during the Summer months, but they also will hunt at dusk and dawn as well.
Like most diurnal (daytime) raptors, the female is larger and more colourful than the male, contrary to the rest of the bird world. The male Snowy owl is almost completely white.
For this shot I was lying down on my stomach in the snow. The weather was overcast, and snowflakes were falling. The lighting conditions were not the best.I used ISO 400 for this shot.
I posted a similar shot today on TN,but a slightly different angle, and the bird in this one is looking away from me a bit. This shot has a better horizon, the other had some slightly distracting OOF silos in the background.I am also a few feet closer to the subject with this one.

Hi Rob,
Stunning portrait of this snowy owl! Despite the hard conditions of weather and your uncomfortable pose, your photo is a true success! Very clear and sharp. Rare to see this bird so close! Very well done! Annie

Hi Rob
This is a very good capture of that Snowy Owl.You chanced to shot it with her eyes open which is not frequent. Getting so close when the bird is on the ground is also an exploit. Very nice photo, very sharp details and what a vantage point.
Thanks for sharing
Serge

Hi Rob - You have a fascinating gallery of beautiful wildlife shots coupled with interesting notes! This snowy owl portrait is so pleasing to look at because the bird is so well in focus that one can see the details of its beautiful 'coat'. Its colours match those of the environment perfectly. BTW, to me it looks as if the bird does look at you/us. Thank you for sharing such a fine image of this gorgeous looking bird! - Cordelia :))

Hello Rob,
A fine pose and great details in this attractive and special bird!
I like the simplicity in composition, where the subject is placed in it's right element...
Fine details in the plumage, and the eyes are the only real colour spots!
Greetings,
Pablo -
