Almost there
This picture I took on top of the same hill as yesterday’s post. This time it is a young biker trying to get his breath after the steep climb of the ‘Muur’ in Geraardsbergen. This is one of the harder parts of the bicycling ‘Tour of Flandres’, the 200 km race of endurance with plenty of wind and cobblestones. When we talked with him, he was still out of breath and very much looking forward to the end, ‘another 17 km to go’ and then rest. He was planning to take part in the race 2 weeks later.
A Bit of History … (from www.rondevanvlaanderen.be)
A very selective circuit had been chosen for the Tour of Flanders during the first half of the 20th century As the roads in Flanders were in such a bad condition, they were perfect to tear a bunch apart.
Nevertheless it is a misunderstanding that 75 percent of the circuit were cobblestones. Until the end of the fifties, half of the distance was cycle track or gravel. It was not at all a comfortable road but it was much better than the cobblestones beside. These cobble stoned roads were so different from the cobblestones we know nowadays. They were cut coarsely, laid unequally and centimetres apart. Before the second world war, only the more important roads improved. But during the economic redevelopment, the local governments changed almost every road into asphalt. The amount of cobblestones that at first seemed to be inexhaustible, alarmed the organizers as some important inclines were asphalted . They needed topographical cards and local people to help them find small country roads. It was primordial not to let the race end into a mass sprint. By searching cobblestones to have a typical circuit, the number of inclines in the tour grew.
Photo
Well, this one is for fun only. I found out yesterday that one of our TL members rode this race when he was a very young boy, so here’s to you and the memories !
I know that the picture probably could be improved, the guy is sitting smack in the middle, but then again I wanted to emphasize on the young cyclist. It was important I kept the colors of his shirt, the rest was OK for black and white. Originally it was a much bigger picture, but in resizing I found I lost the expression on his face, so that is why I cropped more than half, so ending up with the guy in the middle.
Any comments/workshops/critiques etc welcome.
Thank you,

Hi Marleen,
J'aime bien le coureur coloré ressortant au milieu de l'immensité grise - c'est super bien fait et donne une grande impression de solitude -
Bravo

Hey hey,
I like the color of the out of breathe man against the b/w backdrop of all those branches.
Funny thing here is I get the out of breathe atmosphere, mood, feeling from the way you captured this individual. Great decisive moment.
I want to try a WS with a different crop.
Take care Marleen,
Michael
bonsoir Marleen, sport d'équipe, sport de solitaire, on ne peut compter que sur soi. Une lumière dans la grisaille.
Beau c'est joli.

Nice catch, the best thing is that you see the biker without his bike. I love the fact he looks in the camera, that makes me feel the pain he is going through.
good use of selective desaturation...placing him in the center seemed appropriate to me. well done, Marleen. a good moment captured.
Hoi Marleen,
Nogmaals bedankt Marleen ;-)
Jos
