This my B&W rendition of the Avon River which is a unique part of Christchurch City as it sustains a diverse plant and animal life and is a source of many recreational activities. It creates a soothing tranquility meandering through the heart of city.
I used PhotoShop CS2 for converting the original color image. I've posted the original color image in the Workshop if you want to create your own B&W version. Here are the post processing steps I used;
1) Convert to grayscale ... Image -> Mode -> Grayscale
2) So as not to overblown the sky, I first selected the clouds and sky. Then I inverse it so I can just process the trees and river.
3) Using the Brightness/Contrast function I then adjusted the brightness and contrast of the trees and river. Actually, I was experimenting in trying to achieve an 'infrared' look.

Renier: very very nice IMAGE I am a big fan of INFRARED and you have really approached the look. very nice Could you re explain how you selected the clouds and sky so as to not overblow them... How did you select then INVERSE them?

Hello Renier

Welcome to Treklens.

Interesting PP work. Works well with these poplar trees and the clouds. Reflection son the Avon are sharp too.

Good work! TFS,
Martyn

Hi Renier. Welcome to TL! This is a brave B&W of such a colourful and relaxed part of Christchurch, where we lived for 3 years a few decades ago. Good perspective and many reflections. TFS. Murray.

Hi Renier - welcome to TL and this is an excellent shot with which to start your time here :-)

Great choice of b/w and vertical, the composition is excellent and I especially like the quality of the water...very nice indeed. Good note too :-)

Hi Renier,
Welcome to Treklens.
A very impressive shot, with interesting form and perspective. The reflection as an icing of the cake, making this shot very nice to see. Another impact for this posting, is your useful and informative note.

I liked your shots in TE, as well. I have some posting there, but not as active as here. TE is a bit more challenging where a beginner like me could not really cope with.

Regards,
Ramdan.

Hello my friend Renier!
Welcome to TrekLens! Excellent first photo! Good coice - B&W! Nice composition and reflections!
TFS, Best regards, Zorica

Hi Renier
Just a wild guess ... going by the name, the profile pic, and the passion for photography - Filipino?
Welcome to TrekLens first of all! Nicely composed capture here of this familiar view, I grew up in Christchurch and still visit often. May I recommend also playing around in the "gradient map" feature (found in Image > Adjustments) as a good way of converting to b&w? - Although it won't give you the 'infrared' look you wanted!
A challenging angle, too - shooting mostly into the sun, but you've delivered it well enough here. Congratulations.

Renier good morning
Welcome to TL. It's nice to see renowned photographers cross the line and join in. This one is really great and impressive with the beautiful perspective created and the thin looming tree trunks

Hello Renier,
I don't think I'm much wrong in assuming someone planted those trees back then!
Lovely details in the black and white rendering, tonality is good leaning a tad to the contrasty side...
Greetings,
Pablo -

great path for the eyes, beautiful balance of the composition.

congrats.
