[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Fur Rondezvous festival in Anchorage Alaska dates back to the 1930's when fur traders came to trade their furs after the winter months. The festival includes events like dog sled racing, ice sculpture contests, ice bowling, running with the raindeer and a host of carnival like activities.

This man was walking in the crowd with a wolf head and coat which came down to his ankles. In modern times I am sure a lot of us are concerned about animal protection but in the spirit of Alaska's fur trading many years ago it seemed to fit in perfectly.

Taking photographs in Anchorage was difficult for me. The light was very strong with highlights and shadows much more defined than what I am used to. It may be that the air was much clearer and there was no haze to diffuse the light.

This shot took a lot of manipulation to bring out the proper light and details and to open up the shadows.

I learned something about my fixed lenses. In a situation where there are large crowds it is difficult to change lenses. It is especially difficult when the temperature is quite cold and you have to take gloves on and off. I would have been better off with one lens..like a 20-100mm range zoom for all the shots.

I guess it does suit the situation. Sure it would have been better to use the zoom lense at this event...and not having to get your hands cold by changign the lenses. But i guess fixed lesnes have their advantages as well. I have never used one so i cant tell. I like the close cropp you have made of the photos. Letting subject completly fill the frame.

Does that dog know there's a man under it's Jaw...!! !!unusual subject, but a good image, nice and focused well...and a good composition...

Hi Roger,

I always find it a problem to change lenses, in the cold because of your gloves, in the heat because of wind blowing sand all around you, or just because you don't have time. But to have 2 bodies would mean more things to carry around and that is also a problem when you are walking around in a crowd. Hop you find the right lens for the job.

In the spirit of Alaska indeed a wonderful picture, I have no problems with it what so ever. I really had to look twice because the wolfs head seems so alive.

This is what I needed when I walked out of the airport after two months in the sun :) This reminds me of a book I read long ago, 'Mountain Man'. TFS

Greenpeace is on their way :)
