Th tight composition of this really lets us see how poorly cared for the horse is with flies plaguing it. The low-hung head really adds to the feeling.

Mmm... I don't know about this one, Rob. I can understand why you wanted to present a close-up, but I think it is way too closely cropped: the eye-patch is almost glued to the left edge, the lips are missing, no ears at all... imo those are important body language indicators, and hence important to convey the message you wanted to pass to us...
Just my 2 cents, of course ;o)

One reason I can think of.. the tormented face of the horse due to Sun and these buggers ' flies' ?!

This photo sends a strong message of abuse and negligence.
Its a good thing you photographed so close as I am sure the ears were in bad condition, and the teeth probably worn out. The head hanging down, he looks like a broken horse resigned to his fate.

Nice closeup, very sharp details and excellent light, but I'm afraid I'd have to go with Dingo's opinion...the image is cropped too much...you should've included the whole head of the horse. Nevertheless, great job!

Poor horse, yeah, I feel sorry for it too. Sometimes they have to stand around for a long time being bothered by flies. I guess the tail can't reach the muzzle to shoo them away.

Hello Rob,
A worthy and revealing portrait of what is clearly not a very happy, or well cared for animal. I assume that you have cropped the original image to produce the unusual format used here. This cropping certainly adds to the edgy, hopeless and oppressive atmosphere of the picture but does very little for it from a technical point of view. To me this is absolutely appropriate and acceptable.
