[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
So I decided to see how night exposures would be on my camera. One feature I had yet to test out. It was about 10pm last night and I went outside with the camera and the tripod.

First I turned the ISO up to 1600 and shutterspeed to 8 seconds. This just made a bleached white exposure. Several attempts later I found the right setting and caught all the light coming from my neighbors homes.

Taken at 5 seconds at ISO 64. Brightness/Contrast increased and cropped in GIMP. Made the clouds stand still.

Hi Zeb

I commend you for experimenting like this, I don't think enough of us do that - and after all this is a learning site.

I think compositionally this is fine with the fence in the foreground and the roof edges slanting across the image like that. But although the composition is fine, i'm not sure the subject matter has much "oomph".

For what it's work, my suggestions are these...

1. For night shots, try and get some coloured lights or light trails in there. They add interest and would make the thumbnail pop out on the gallery page

2. Try a narrower aperture - f2.8 is very wide open so you lose some sharpness and also a narrow aperture can help you get the 'starlight' effect in some lights.

3. For some excellent nightshots, look at the work done by Daniel/eyesthetix http://www.treklens.com/members/eyesthetix/photos/

Hope this helps! Richard

Great experiment. It's always nice to see somebody step outside the box a little. HOwever, suburban backyards might not be the best place for this kind of experiment, especially since the noise level is a bit high. I would rather see you turn the camera away from the houses, turn the ISO down and take a longer exposure.
If you really want to have fun, try setting it up where you have traffic zipping by.
Nice posting - hope to see more experiments in the future
