750 MONZA SCAGLIETTI SPIDER WORKS TEAM CAR
The four-cylinder 750 Monza made its debut in June 1954 with a first-time-out win at Monza by team drivers Hawthorn and Maglioli. Gonzales and Trintignant took second place in a similar model. The body of the 750 Monza was designed by Enzo Ferrari’s son Dino and built by Scaglietti. This car was a works entry in the 1955 Mille Miglia, driven by Sergio Sighinolfi; it finished sixth, having taken 11 hours 33 minutes 27 seconds to complete the 998-mile course, an average of over 86 mph (138 km/h). After the race it was sold to Jacques Jonneret of Geneva, Switzerland, and raced by him until 1957 with some success, including a second overall and first in class at the 1956 Mont Ventoux hillclimb. He sold the car to Peter Monteverdi, who fitted a special coupé body with gullwing doors. It was acquired by the Louwman Collection in 1989 and restored with a correct Scaglietti body taken from a sister car in the 1970s.The earlier 750 Monza cars were all equipped with drum brakes on all four wheels, but that this car is believed to be the first production 750 Monza equipped with disc brakes. |
