I took this during the May Day celebrations. It was my first try at shooting fireworks and this is what I found:

A good setting would be:
- Manual mode f/16 and 5 seconds exposure
- Manual focus to infitinity (and beyond! ;P)
- A steady tripod

The rest is really up to luck and how you can predict when to squeeze that shutter to get the 5 seconds exposure needed to get that perfect shot.

Also, I found that there is no one setting for all kinds of fireworks (Unless there is?!). I've got a lot of shots overexposed because of that 5 seconds exposure I was using.

Do you have any tips to share? Thanks in advance :)

Until the next... ;)

really really left me speachless
great job

mervyn.. u must be kidding me if this is your first try to capture fireworks. Coz for me, this is absolutely one of the BEST FIREWORKS photo i ever SEEN! I am serious! Everything is so PERFECT in your photo here. The composition is very balanced, all the 3 different types of 'flower' are really well captured (including the trails where they are shooting up!), sharpness and colors and contrasts are very good too.. very very very good job. straight to my Favourite list.

thanks for sharing this.

Bien réussi, ce qui est difficile avec ce genre de photo est de réussir un bon cadrage, on ne s'est jamais dans quel sens ça va, bravo !

Fantastic capture Mervyn. Very professional. The reflection on the water is a nice touch and balances everything out. Your experimentation has really paid off here. Well done.

Nice capture. Sounds like you clamp the F stop down a bit more then i did but looks like it worked well for you. Did you crop this to get such a nice composition? The only thing i could think to add would be that if Nikon has an image stabilized lens like unto what canon has that can help compensate for ground shake if you are near the blast. Nice shot!

Great and amazing view - I like those fireworks shots - and looking forward to get a good one myself - may be even today.

Thanks for sharing Lau

WOW!! Very impressive shot, especially being your first try!
The exposure time really varies, and I have found that to be too long as well. I guess if you want the fireworks to really 'spray' through the sky the longer would be better - until you get to the finale of the show when they all go off at once and then there is too much light and leftover smoke from previous fires.

You succeeded very nicely with this shot though-- it its so clear! :)

This post can be use in Singapore tourism..:)

Well, the fireworks look like huge flowers in the sky. The exposure, composition, sharpness are all skilfully managed. I really like it!

S U P R E B!!

Shelly.

Wow what a brilliant shot. We have lots of firework displays here in the U.K. on November 5th so checking TL for some ideas. Thanks for sharing this shot and also the tips.

Wonderful picture. Wonderful results. Thank you very much for the information in the note. TFS.

Kiran.

Your first try and a success! Very sharp like a needle and no smoke! I love it. Very neat, no noise.

Take care, Yan :)

Beautiful exposure. When a light is focussed, the exposure is very important. You did it great.

Hi Talisman,

Honestly, I don't think you need any tips here, this (to me) looks flawless! Very sharp and focused, the colours stand out beautifully and there's a great sense of celebration in this image! :) Wonderful timing as well, you got the colours in all their splendor. This is the best fireworks shot I've seen so far. Thanks for posting it.

Biance.

Excellent shot. Everything fits here perfect. Exposure is fine as is compo.

It's a perfect image with fireworks!
Well done and thanks for the "photographer's note".
All the best,
Simina
