Chilean flamingoes at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago

Chilean flamingoes are the flamingoes of choice in this free Chicago zoo because they are winter-hardy and thus suitable for Chicago's weather.

The orange coloration of flamingoes is due to the pigment carotene that is abundant in crabs and shrimps, the favorite food of these birds.

Tech: Shot at 400mm, cropped, autolevels, contrast, saturation, resize and unsharp mask.
