This is DURIAN. It's a fruit.

The fruit can grow up to 30 centimetres (12 in) long and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter, and typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to 7 lbs). Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale-yellow to red, depending on the species.

The hard outer husk is covered with sharp, prickly thorns while the edible flesh within emits a distinctive odour, which is regarded as either fragrant or overpowering and offensive. The odour of the ripe fruit is strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Due to the unusual odour, the durian is forbidden from certain establishments such as hotels and public transportations in Southeast Asia.
The odour has prompted many people to formulate evocative descriptions with views ranging from those of deep appreciation to intense disgust.

The durian, native to Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia, has only been known to the western world for about 600 years. The British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace famously described its flesh as "a rich custard highly flavoured with almonds" in the 19th century.
The flesh can be consumed at various stages of ripeness and is used to flavour a wide variety of savoury and sweet edibles in Southeast Asian cuisines. The seeds can also be eaten when cooked. The name durian comes from the Malay word duri (thorn) together with the suffix -an.

Hi Tjutjut,

You already promissed another special fruit and indeed this one is also unknown to me. With interest I have been reading your note - wonder what the smell would be when it tastes like vanilla custard with a lot of almonds.
But it's very photogenic.

Hello Tjutjut,
Yikes! Its the durian season as well in Indonesia? I don't eat durian, but the whole family does. My husband bought them and eat them out in the porch...sad but true. hahaha.
A very good composition with extremely great colors. Clarity and sharpness are just brilliant against the background. Hmmm, it does look tempting! Really, really great work here, Tjutjut! Love it.

Hi Tjutjut, I tried this recently and it was very tasty. For many years i steered away from it because of the reputation mentioned in your note but it was very good. I like the tight crop as well as the taste. TFS. Murray.

I like Durian Tjutjut. One of the expensive fruits here in Manila. Nice exposure my friend, yellow is very difficult to deal with. Well done.

Hello Tjutjut

It is a beautiful macro!
Your history on this fruit is a lot
interesting, because for the odor that you speak that
she exhales, even so still it is eatable.
and for the that I read it should be very strong the odor.
Details excellent and very well defined in the fruit.
Beautiful post! High quality the picture!
Congratulations my friend..

ive seen the Durian grown in some part of Australia but cannot remember where.. probably the hotter place.. it grow beautifully there..

i like eating durian but not this yellow one.. i prefer the white one with lesser strong smell.. or and i love the forest durian where the colour of the fruit either bright yellow or orange a smaller version.. that one is more yummy.. hehe bro lepas ne buah nya dimakan ya?

compare buah bro yg previous aku rasa yg ne paling cantik shotnya.. :)

I must say I'm usually quite adventurous with food but when I tried this in Sarawak I thought it was quite disgusting! I guess you either love it or hate it.
