Poets' Mountain

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
In the Pont de Nant nature preserve in the mountains high above the town of Bex, near the entrance to the preserve stands an enormous exposed rock face. Carved into this rock in huge block letters is an inscription in French, which in English reads:
"To Eugène Rambert, 1830-1886; to Jean Muret, 1798-1877; and to Juste Olivier, 1807-1876."
Under this inscription appear the initials "S.A.C." Unfortunately, I was unable to convey adequately the size of the rockface or that of the lettering in this photo, but they are quite enormous.
After passing this monument several times, I eventually grew curious as to the identities of the men whose names have been etched so largely into this mountainside. After a considerable amount of internet research, I was able to discover only that Rambert and Olivier were both notable Swiss poets of their time. I could find nothing on Muret, but I assume deductively that he must also have been a Swiss poet. Similarly, I could find nothing on the identity of "S.A.C.", nor anything about the monument itself, when and why it was carved.
If you know the answers to any of these questions, I would love to hear from you. |
