Life on the Edge!

Today my husband and I were shouted lunch in the Observatory Restaurant in the SKY Tower in Auckland City.

The Sky Tower, built in 1997, is an Auckland landmark icon. The Sky Tower, 328 m high, is an observation and telecommunications tower. Upper levels accommodate communications equipment, three circular public observation levels - Sky Deck, Main Observation level, and the Sky Lounge, a revolving restaurant, from each of which you can get a 360-degree view of Auckland.

While we were there 5 people (in orange) and a guide (wearing blue)came and walked on a 1.2 metre-wide walkway all the way around the Sky tower – 192 metres above the ground, no handrails and nothing but air either side of them!

They traversed 360 degrees around the Sky Tower – the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere and I took lots of photos of them.

They started out real slowly – I could see the nerves working in 2 of them, the first and the third ladies. But the other 3 were quite cool and collected – especially the man. I think this photo shows their body-language quite well!!

As they were slowly walking along the guide kept stopping to take photos of them all. And from inside the restaurant many of us were taking photos of them too.

Unfortunately it was a very dull day and there seemed to be no colour – only grey!!

Check out the workshops ONE and TWO showing the view from the restaurant.

BTW, it costs $115 to do the walk.

Hi Janice,

amazing shot. He can feel the high!

Best regards,

Hi Janice.
Wow, how brave are they? Rather them than me and you're also brave for being inside at that height. I hate heights so even inside it would be a challenge for me.
Must be a fabulous view so well worth it.
Lovely capture. I think the orange suits work well against the grey day.
What an experience.

Wonderful photo Janice, great contrast between grey and orange. Their expressions and body-language does say it all.

WOW Janice
They are super brave. I am always blown away that people pay for things like this... I guess its the thrill? I'd be the one clung to the walkway...
Nice sharp image from inside!

A bit cheaper than climbing the Sydney harbour bridge Janice but I am too wimpy for either (plus my lungs and legs wouldn't let me). The grey skies helped with the colour of the overalls I think and you did well shooting from inside. I need some boots like those the guide is wearing, my current ones get a bit soggy some mornings.

hello Janice,
it just goes to show that we should have our cameras with us at all times. Good one! I liked the first link too, maybe even better as the man in blue's body language is good. he is laughing with his hand on his hip.
regards
Bev

Great piece of reportage - the orange suits contrast superbly against the greys and the sharp details and facial expressions are excellent.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Janice!
Oh my, for one I would NOT pay 115.00 to walk around that, for two oh man I wouldn't walk around that for FREE!! Yikes!!
What a great shot though , the bright orange jump suits are a great contrast to the blue in the photo. Great oppertunity you caught! Nice job!
