I took this hand-held, "safe" 1/1600 sec. exposure photo of an Iris at the Saint Louis Botanical Gardens on a VERY bright and sunny day back on the 18th of May.

Iris is a genus of between 200-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers which takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, Iris is also very widely used as a common name and refers to all Iris species as well as some closely related genera.

Find out more about the Iris flowers from the same place that I got these notes:

Here's a song bythe Goo Goo Dolls called Iris that I really like.

The song is named for Iris DeMent (born January 5, 1961) is an American singer and songwriter. DeMent's musical style encompasses the genres Country and Folk music.

I found this at wikipedia also:

The song was named "Iris" by guitarist/vocalist John Rzeznik for Iris DeMent. Rzeznik found her name while flipping through a magazine, and thought it was a nice name, so he chose it for the song. Prior to this, some fans of the song have speculated that the title refers to the Greek messenger of the gods, Iris. This is thought supposedly because some angels are considered messengers and this song was written for the movie City of Angels (in which the main character is an angel).
The song was the most popular song on the soundtrack of the 1998 movie "City of Angels".

It starred Meg Ryan, Nicholas Cage, Dennis Franz & Andre Braugher.

Watch the video with parts from the movie here.
It's well done!

Iris- The Goo Goo Dolls

And I'd give up forever to touch you
Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
Chorus

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything seems like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know your alive

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

I love these bearded irises. Always so pretty in colour and shapes. Those brushes on their petals can make an excellent macro image.
Beautiful sharpness and details Scott,
Thank you for brightening this wet, grey day Down Under

Incredible clarity here Scott! LOVE the sharpness and the DOF really makes it stand out, without being too shallow! You got most of the flower sharp, which is really nice! I love the song in your notes!

Hi Scott,

I love flowers of all kinds. I have some Iris' in my garden, but none this lovely shade. The blurry background adds to the beauty of the iris in this shot. Terrific details.

thanks, Lisa

Hi Scott,
I IMHO the song is about a girl named "Iris"
I like how you linked your flower to this song! Love the Goo Goo Dolls... Daughter still thinks its a girl band! :)

Anyway...
Your Iris is very detailed and sharp.. with a perfect bg.. I have been trying to get a nice sharp photo of ours but no luck.. I am going to jot down your photo info and give it a try :)

Thanks for the notes

Tricia

Beautiful colours and sharp details. I'm torn on whether the bud at the bottom adds to the picture or detracts from it - part of me wants to clone it out but then again it does add context to the flower.
Thanks for sharing

Hi Scott, like the vibrant color in the Iris and sharp detail of the subject.
Your narrow DOF makes the BG colors and elemants enhance your subject.

Intense color with excellent detail.

Bonjour Scott
Le sujet est net et se détache bien sur un fond flou.C'est très réussi avec des couleurs justes.
bravo et bonne journée.

Hello Scott!

The ''safe'' speed provided a very sharp and narrow depth of field. Lovely colors and tight composition. Color saturation or not , the look is terrific ,
Well done !
