Hi Folks,

This gentle ape with its reddish-brown coat now barely survives in the tropical forests of Sumatra and Borneo where once it roamed over great swathes of Asia.

In the past, indigenous peoples of these regions believed orangutans were actually people hiding in the trees because they did not want to work.

The orangutan can be divided into two species - the Pongo pygmaeus which resides in Borneo and the Pongo abelii which makes its home in Sumatra. The Bornean male has large cheek pads, a tremendous laryngeal sac and a square-shaped face. The Sumatran male has small pads and sac, a ginger-coloured moustache and a diamond-shaped face.

The orangutan is the largest tree-dwelling mammal in the world and is the only strictly arboreal ape. This means that it spends most of its life in trees, building a new nest each night in the treetop and sleeping in it. Larger males, because of their weight, spend more time on the ground.

Its diet consists of bark, leaves, flowers, a variety of insects and over 300 kinds of fruits.

Orangutans are considered the most intelligent of the great apes. Because they are so closely related to humans, we can learn a lot about our origins, physiology and psychology from observing them.

The previous image showed the social intelligence in orangutans where they communicate with each other. The images here and here show an orangutan executing his intelligence by unhasking a coconut without any tool, just bare hands.

Thanks for viewing.

And Powerful they are.!
Excellent and gorgeous series of our 'father', Agoes.
Ones, Meri was next to go on a picture with an Orang Utan, in the Zoo of Singapore (or was it Birdpark?)
Then it started heavy raining, so the man took off with the Orangutan hand in Hand.
On the pictures what was made the Ape put his arm on the people with whom it got pictured, very adorreble that was.
Thanks for showing them.
Jan

Hi Agoes,
Thanks for posting the animal series. They are a joy to see. I like the care and tenderness shown by the mom to the youngster. Tech details are mighty fine. Best regards, Danilo

HI Agoes
I sure wish he was around when I need to open something.
Its a very good looking animal with that reddish coat of fur.
You have captured it well, and he obvioulsy was not scared of the camera as he looks very natural and right at home .
Good shot and TFS

hi Agoes

Nice shot of the monkey at play surrounded by greenery. We did not have time to stop by Sepilok Rehab Centre but you have enough of these primates as your subject here in KK.

Sudah jumpa AJ bro!

Hi Agoes,

This photo demonstrates the strength of the orangutan. Your sharp image brilliantly demonstrates the orangutan removing the husk of the coconut without so much as a grimace. Great shot!!.

TFS.

Alvin
