[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The very first water system in the city of Toronto was installed and maintained by a private company, The Toronto Gas, Light & Water Company in 1843. Water was distributed through a system of wooden pipes to those who could afford the cost.
At the same time there was another private company called "Furniss Works" who provided water to the public from 1843 to 1873. Their main purpose was to provide water for firefighting and they were unable to keep up with the public demand for water.
Toronto water distribution was in shambles for many years after that.
In 1872, Toronto City Council passed an act which allowed them to take over the existing private water companies and form their own publicly administered water works service. It was in 1873 that Toronto Water Works Company was born. Some time around 1890 the City of Toronto, along with their public company TWW, decided to have some fire hydrants manufactured for them. The TWW hydrant was made in the Kerr & Coombes Foundry in Hamilton Ontario.

Hello Joe. To be honest, I can't say this is one of my prefered subjects, BUT... very good contrast of colours: the strong saturation of yellows draw our attention and stand out on the dark wet pavement (the small reflections of the water are an interesting "source" of light and add to the overall atmosphere). The title is perfect for me. Whatever men's pretentions might be, if you ask the dog he would probably confirm you that this is his best friend. Funny observation.

I like the colour contrasts and the lighting. TFS. Tim. No note?

Nice contrast of the colours Joe, and the composition is really effective too. Congratulations on the end result.

First, thanks for the note. Second thanks for this excellent photography. I Like the saturated colors, the grainy texture of the road, it's one with impact, you just can't miss it and I'm happy I didn't miss it.

An interesting piece of history dramatically presented. Did you increase the saturation of the yellow or is it naturally this bright?

Great shot, Joe. Ordinarily I would not like to see a strong light like the reflection unless it is the main subject as light items seem to draw the attention of the eye away from the main subject. But I guess this photo proves that, every rule is made to be broken. The saturated yellow saves the day and you end up with a very good phoot. Great that you could see this in your mind's eye. Thanks for sharing.T

ihihih that's so great joe! you've turned this ordinary scene into a lovely composition with great contrasting colours resulting in a really pleaseing and interesting scene! yes.. but hide the dogs till the shot is over :-) you've done a great job here! ^_^

je n'avais fait attention à cette photo mais j'aime beaucoup le contraste de la borne avec le bitume et la réverberation de l'éclairage dessus

I like your wet shot Joe! I'm kinda fond of hydrants, and this is a good shot with excellent colour contrast! Tfs, Jay
