The surface of Haleakala at sunset was other-worldly. This is what I tried to capture here. I was thinking of old NASA Moon shots, but wanted to include the blue sky to bring it back down to Earth.

The rocks were very much like Moon rocks. Posting a surface detail shot in the workshop.

>>>>>>>>>>> Wikipedia

Haleakalā is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui.

Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakala ("house of the sun") to the summit area only, most likely due to the fact that from the west side of the island, the sun could be seen rising up over the eastern side of the mountain. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression at the summit of Haleakalā was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. According to the legend, Maui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day. In modern times, Haleakalā has become synonymous with the entire East Maui volcano.

Hi Vincent - great side lighting, really brings the texture of the landscape out, and again, good use of the upright format..

Good work
David

Hi Vincent,
I like the texture on the foreground, the shape of the distant hill is attractive, and effective side lighting. Greetings! Danilo

Salut Vincent,
Avec cette luminosité, cela créé tout à fait une ambiance lunaire, j'aime beaucoup le jeu d'ombre avec la roche
Bonne journée

Karèle

it was like outside earth shot.. mars, perhap? if not because of the sky it really look like the planet.. beautiful shot of this place, Vincent.. looks barren :) tfs..

regards, terry

Hello Vincent,
Nice capture of this rough landscape. I like the way you composed the frame. The texture is great and the light is nice casting shadows on the moon like terrain. This certainly looks like the surface of the moon. Nice shot Vincent.
Regards,
Kevin

Bonjour Vincent

Belle composition et jolie lumière rasante qui accentue la rugosité du sol

I like how the long shadows play up the textures and shapes of this lava rock landscape. The clear blue sky makes a good "smooth" contrast. Great use of composition and elements for another interesting Maui image. An amazing tour:)

HI VINCENT , AWESOME SHOT, THIS IS LIKE A NASA IMAGE FROM MARS OR SOMETHING, NICE COLORS AND DETAILS, TAKE CARE, SCOTT

Earth is lovely place and a fantastic world. thanks

It really does look like the moon, with the exception of the blue sky. I realise you wanted to include it - but I reckon if you made this black-and-white it would look very lunar indeed.
Interesting that NZ Maori has almost the same legend of the sun - and Maui!

Hi Vincent

Good trxtured lighting, on the rocky scree of the barren volcano. Tfs!

Mars?? Amazing how such a richly humid place can look like the moon! Really nice work on this one Vincent! I like your shadows here!
B-)
Linda

Yeah - lokks like another planet!
Hi vincent,
nice sharpnes and shadowlines. If you'd turn the sky into red it could be a post from planet Mars.
TFS Thomas

Hi Vincent,
beautifully textured shot. Low sidelight gave excellent results, apart of warmness of late sunset colours. tfs
