Belgian Grand Prix 2000, at the magnificent Spa-Francochamps circuit in the Ardennes. This is a place that makes silverstone look like a Karting track - well almost. Despite the caption this was not taken during qualifying but actually the Friday morning practice session. It is taken from the top of the Eau Rouge corner and we see Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari about to enter this daunting corner.
The Video screen in the background is displaying the view from the car in the picture and if you examine the position of the car compared to the screen, it can be seen that the screen is showing the car further from the corner than it is. I can only assume this is due to the camera transmission taking a fraction of time to reach the screen - enough for the car to progress down the track. |

The 'distance' distortion is down to the very wide-angle lens used on on-board camera. Watch any televised F1 GP and the switch away from onboard to trackside will give the same result. The image is 'stretched'.
