[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This charismatic young lady was sitting outside a coffee shop, smoking a cigar and sitting with her dog who was part Wolf. I have had a few critiques where people asked how I manage to get strangers to pose…I try to talk to interesting people a little before I ask if I can photograph them. If they don’t want to have their pictures taken I respect their wishes…in one case I took a picture and showed it to a man that said he didn’t want me to have the shot. I erased it from the card immediately. I would say that only one in a hundred people have said they didn’t want their picture taken…

When I take the pictures I use the burst mode to get multiple shots with different expressions. People usually begin by posing and giving the expression they think is appropriate but after a few minutes they relax and I can usually get a much more realistic expression. I always offer to email the pictures to the subject and I always tell them about TrekLens so they can read the comments on their pictures.

In taking candid shots it’s important not to inconvenience the subject too much…so if I have to reposition them in the light I try to do it only once. I move back to include some background incase I have to do any cropping. I am pretty comfortable with the 85mm lens now and realize that I have to start with an aperture about 5 and go up or down from there. If I am standing far enough back to get their whole image instead of a head and shoulder image I can go to a larger aperture.

The only real advice is to begin talking to people and getting comfortable with them and taking their pictures…People seem more comfortable if you include something in the shot they care about…a motorcycle, dog, or unique clothing, cigar, etc….

Wonderfully managed a nice shot. It does not that you have captured a starnger's shot. In all respect it is perfect. Great lighting, excelent details and obveiously the composition.

The note is also help full to others especially when they gonna take such shots in the streets.

I like your technique of chatting and then asking for the shot - I've done the same, although rarely, and never with such superb results.

A lovely portrait. Much more caracter than the previous one with her cigar. This one is all about emotion, true friendship and love. The portrait says it all as both of them are proud to be photographed with each other.

What is her name? The girl.

She looks mature for 19 but really photogenic smile there. The dog looks a bit like husky color? I love this portrait shot, she will be happy to have a print hanging in the house.

Question : if the photographer is her loved one, how would you advise?

this photo looks so natural, so immediate, that it really has the feel of a professional shot for a fashion brochure or magazine. the way she's sitting and holding the dog, the way she's looking into the camera - you'd never say it's someone you met in a cafe and asked for a photo.

Just another superb and memorable candid portrait. Your subjects are both wonderful to look at - they make the viewer want to examine the image for a long time. Excellent composition, well-composed. The background is blurred just the right amount not to be a distraction. I particularly appreciate your note, as I continually wonder at how you are always able to get such interesting candid photos of strangers. Great stuff.
