Seeing the Birds-eye View of a Paraglider

I was at North Head at Devonport last month, watching the yachts training for the Louis Vuitton Cup, and two men arrived with their paragliders.

There wasn't much wind so the yachts trained a long way away. But I was happy to see a couple of Paragliders taking off from the extinct volcano I was sitting on.

I have posted a photo as a workshop showing you North Head, where I took this photo from.

Paragliding is a free-flying, foot-launched aircraft. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing, whose shape is formed by the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing.

The paraglider wing or canopy is known in aeronautical engineering as a ram-air airfoil, or parafoil.

Such wings comprise two layers of fabric which are connected to internal supporting material in such a way as to form a row of cells.

By leaving most of the cells open only at the leading edge, incoming air (ram-air pressure) keeps the wing inflated, thus maintaining its shape.

When inflated, the wing's cross-section has the typical teardrop aerofoil shape.

Wow looks like your up there with him Janice!! Nice panning effect with pin sharp detail.

Regards Mark :)

Nice shot Janice - good bit of panning!! Sharp on the paraglider..

I don't go up in those things - it needs metal wings, fuselage and preferably a large jet engine LOL

DAvid

Amazing! I've been wanting to go paragliding for a while now...and this makes me want to even more! Maybe next week when I have a day off =P. Nice action shot, he's nice and sharp but you can see the movement on the hills - very effective.

TFS,

Cadi

Hi Janice,
Gues you were panning here, the motion blur of the background gives the feeling of speed, quite a good result considering the shutter speed of only 1/100 sec and an apperture of f/18. I would have chosen for a lower f-stop and a higher shutterspeed. Anyway the result is wonderful! A fine contribution to the Friday's theme :-)

At first I thought you had flipped your 1000th post Janice, but I notice he is not snapping your picture this time.
Nicely panned, every shroud is pin sharp, well done.
The yacht below gives a good perspective on his altitude.
He's a pretty laid back pilot.
Pete.

Hello Janice,

For a moment, I thought you were alongside him!
Good, sharp focus on the focal point with a good dof to isolate him from the b/g.
It certainly captures the spirit of the adventure! Not one for someone with vertigo!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

superb. The paraglider seems very relaxted !!!
a good and original contribution.

Wow...wonderful POV/composition...as if hanging in the air right next to this paraglider! The red stands out in the image, drawing even more attention to the subject. An amazing shot and well handled.

My first thought was is Janice flying too
The image gives that impression and I like it that way
See You

Bonjour Janice,

Good response to theme. Very sharp image (look a the fine nylon line), well exposed with saturated FG color, haze reduce saturation of BG colors...what can we do? But it gives depth to the image. Nice compostion. Your elevated POV gave me the feeling you were doing the same sport, but after reading I discovered you cheated (just joking). Perfect image for the theme, and TFS.

Alain

Hell Janice.
Fantastic good picture of the paraglider with the sailingboat at distance.
Thanks for the picture and note in the ws, it helps a lot to understand.
Cheers,
jan
