The Meyer Lemon Tree

Can you smell the perfume? Nothing smells better than lemon blossoms.

Yesterday we had a morning of heavy showers, so once it stopped raining I went out into the garden to see what I could see. I love the look of these colourful fruit, fragrant blossoms, and glossy evergreen foliage, and especially after the rain, as I think the plants look so good with the raindrops still hanging heavily on them.

This is our Meyer Lemon, which we’ve had in our garden for 9 years now. By far, the Meyer Lemon is the most popular of all the citrus we grow. For 10 months of the year we usually have lemons on it always ready to be picked. At some times like now, there can be ripe fruit, green fruit and also the flowers. In fact, the tree often flowers twice a year, such that at times either fruit and flowers can be present nearly all year long.

The Meyer Lemon Tree is a hardy variety and the best lemon tree in New Zealand. It is not actually a real lemon but a cross between a lemon, a type of orange and a mandarin. While it retains most of the characteristics of a lemon, it has a bit less acidity, less bitterness, more sweetness and thinner skin. The skin of the Meyer Lemon lacks the typical zest of a real lemon. But it has gained favour because it bears a heavy crop and it is a relatively hardy plant. We could never be without a lemon tree in our garden – and always a Meyer Lemon.

Oh yes, I miss that smell... we used to have one in our old house... but none in our new house. :( Great details, clarity and DOF. Well done... :) Thanks for sharing Janice...

Yes, I can smell! Great shot! I love it!

Carla

Nice macro, Janice, and composition also the rain drops on the leaves are fantastic detail.
I actually don't know what it smells like :( but I'll keep it in mind for next time I see a lemon tree :) because I like lemons a lot.

Beautiful close-up, Jancie! You caught the rain drop falling from the leaf just at the right time. And what a lovely composition. You make me want to jump on the next plane and go back to NZ...

Mice macro. I like the effect of water on leaves and the colours.

No lemon in my garden, no in my country!
Only in the shop...
I remember an older time, when I live in Africa, there were banana, papaya, mangos and lemon trees in my garden, but in the lemon trees were little dangerous snakes and we put melk in small cups to catch them...what a lot of time is passed!
I like your shot a lot, Janice, with the flower and the fruit at the same time, really nice!
Bravo!
Claude
In augustus we are going to Spain, there are lemon trees, but not the same, I shot them for you.
