Another photo of my particular little favourite Spunky the tufted duck. He's a real darling, this one ;-)
But, you couldn't say that he's got particularly nice table manners.. Tufted ducks are much smaller than the mallards, so they have to be fast, if they want a share of the food offered - and Spunky knows that.
As he's my particular favourite, I try my best to throw food his way, so he gets his fair share. Yesterday - as seen here - I succeeded, today the mallards chased him away, so he got nothing.
Anyway, I usually shoot at 1/800 for birds in motion, but as I was going to shoot ducks just sitting on the water, I decided to try for a higher F-stop and let the camera decide on the shutter speed. I wanted DOF, so I selected F-13. However, for the swift head movements made in order to gobble up his food before someone would take it away from him, the 1/400 selected by the camera turned out rather slow.. I know it may look as if his head is outside the focus range, but it's actually motion blur. His head is moving faster than the bread flying out of his bill!
Treatment: Crop, contrast +10, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Hi Bente,
Spunky is looking a bit hectic. Well he’s in a feeding frenzy.
Never mind. I have seen Spunky before at the pond.
But you know him better than I do. He always swim away when I approaches the pond.
Well anyway, I like your capture of Spunky (poor hungry guy :-)

Spunky is very good looking and his name is rather appropriate for his look and descriptiion. The reflection is wonderful and the drops of water from his bill are great too. I like everything in this photo. Meetingspunky is a pleasure.

Oh yes - bad manners ;-) swallowing the food this way :-)
