[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday evening I had the auspicious honor of being asked to take some photos of my neighbor's daughter and her friends prior to their Senior Prom. I did this for Homecoming, too, but there were a lot less kids and a lot more structured environment and actual poses, so it was pretty easy that time.

This turned out to be a daunting task. For me and these poor kids...

First of all, the weather outside was counter to decent photographs - it was warm and sunny, but the wind was gusting to 30 knots, making a mess out of all the girl's hair and clothes. With ten girls and a half dozen boys, it was almost impossible to get them all not blinking, not messing with their hair, clothes or someone else's hair or clothes. Of course, then there were the mothers - they all had their own ideas on how they wanted the kids to stand and act. Phew! Eventually I said, why don't you all go sit on those benches and do what you want, and I'll just shoot. That's what they did. Finally I got one where almost everyone was in some semblance of recognizable stature and said "Ok, that's it!" and of course kept shooting. That's when I got this one...

I don't envy pro shooters this task. We shot at the Butterfly House (one of the mother's ideas) at Faust Park in Chesterfield, Missouri. There were probably 400 kids from different schools, all there to get the pre-prom pictures done. I didn't see ANY professional photographers there - they were much too smart to subject themselves to shooting in those windy conditions.

So, I am glad I got the opportunity, because it was a great learning experience. I even got a few shots the parents and kids might even like, I don't know. Now I know to have some locations chosen, maybe write down locations that are 1}Out of the wind 2)Under Shelter 3)Nice backgrounds without a zillion people and cars and other junk and anywhere else it might appear to be good for situations such as this. Of course, this is the last kid in the neighborhood that will be graduating for a while, so I may not have the opportunity again until I forget everything I learned last night...

I will also post a couple of workshop photos of some others I shot. I liked this one because it was so natural and spontaneous - these girls wanted to get to the dance!

hello Reed,
I like this and I like the note with it. I like your note writing style which adds value to your posts. I don't buy the " apicture speaks a thousand word" thing, at least not entirely. So this is good because of the difficult circumstances. I like the expression on the girl's face behing the girl in the blue dress.Nice to see nice dresses and I like the action.
Bev
