I was going to upload a sunrise shot, but decided to go with this bright yellow Calendula that I spotted in my garden yesterday just after it had stopped raining. I was picking up the recently fallen Feijoas on the ground when I spotted it out the corner of my eye, so headed straight inside and grabbed the camera.

This flower is most commonly called a Marigold and belongs to the Daisy family. There are about 12-20 species of Calendula and they originally came from the Iran region, but can be found in many countries around the world in a variety of bright yellows, reds and oranges.

Interestingly, Calendulas were used in ancient Greek, Roman, Arabic and Indian cultures as a medicinal herb as well as a dye for fabrics, foods and cosmetics. The oil from its seed contains calendic acid, which is still being used today to cure ear infections, skin inflammation and for wound and burn healing.

From Wikipedia: Calendulas are considered by many gardening experts as one of the most versatile flowers to grow in a garden, especially since it is easy to grow. Seeds sown in the spring, in most soils, will germinate freely in sunny or half-sunny locations. They do best, however, if planted in sunny locations with rich, well-drained soil. The leaves are spirally arranged, 5-18 cm long, simple, and slightly hairy.

An interesting fact that you may or may not know is that Calendula petals are considered edible. They are often used to add colour to salads, and the extract is commonly added to chicken feed to produce darker egg yolks. Their aroma, however, is not sweet, and resembles the smell of hops in beer. So if you’re ever lost in the bush one day and starving for food, try and look for a batch of these beauties and you’ll be good to go :).

Thanks for viewing.

Hello Scott,

Before I mention your shot, can you tell me what Feijoas are? I am mystified!

Great shot with sharpness in the centre and lovely fresh details of raindrops.
I really like the dark b/g. It gives the bright flower a more 3D effect.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your kind words on 'The turbans in our garden'.

Scott...what a stunning shot..the light is really beautiful, and what makes it extra special is the water droplets... well done on this one.

I've often used Calendula healing ointment..for skin healing.

Hope you had a good day today.

Best regards
Dawn

Very nice Scott. Love the rich dk. green BG color .. really makes the yellow of the flower pop! Of course the rain drops are a bonus, as are the two unopened buds in the BG.
By the way, what are Feijoas?
Trudy

hello scott

beautiful flower, i like the drops on the petals
the colors contrasted good with the background
beautiful shoot

Hi Scott,

This is a wonderful macro of your Marigold. The vibrant colors and rain drops work well together. Your note is very informative also. We have a local poultry producer whose trademark is the yellow coloring in his chickens, which makes the meat more appealing to the eye (but not in nutritional content). His chicken feed includes Marigold.

TFS

Best Regards,
Werner

Hi Scotto. Great details here and amazing light. Excellent.

Roberto

A well-handled flower shot, especially after a fresh rain decorated it with water drops that capture the light nicely. Clear, good DOF, and well-balanced off-center composition. I especially like the cheerful glow of the vibrant yellow against the darker background greens...good use of color and contrast. Excellent work:)

WOW! I realy like this shot
great light and strong colours
nice comp and DOF

hi Scott,
this wet and shining yellow is excellent,
and this quiet atmosphere is mysterious.
I like everything after rain like this your shot, in my feeling the water gives wonder power to everything on the land.
you captured well that mystic energy from rain to this calendula, and it seems that all preparations to welcome the bee are OK.
thank you,
Akihisa

What a beautiful shot of the Calendula, Scott - it looks really great! Well composed, good sharpness and lighting too.
Wish it was mine

Hi Scott,
I've been reading the forums and a few have mentioned that there are too many flower shots on TL. And I tend to agree, even though I've posted a couple, as most are pretty mundane. This one however, I reckon is simply awesome.
I could say great composition, colour, etc, but enough people have said that already. I love the depth of colour and the contrast. Simply fantastic, congrats on a great shot.
Regards,
Phil

This is a wonderful shot of the flower; well done.
