| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
One thing we love to do is find new and possibly unusual places to eat while we travel. They have to have something special about them, or they do not capture my wife's attention - she is the meal planner on the trips - I just get us there. She finds these places prior to leaving by using the Internet site "Chowhound", a foodie blog, with "its voracious devotion to hyperdeliciousness! Food-lovers worldwide gather here to swap expert tips about restaurants, foods, stores, and bars, as well as cooking, wine, beer, cookware, and more." Hyperdeliciousness! I should have made that word up myself! It is as cool as "Funkadelicacy"...
Anyway, one of the places we just had to check out was Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - they don't appear to have a web site, but they were voted among the Ten Best Restaurants in Memphis.
It was typical that coming into town we were driving through "a neighborhood in transition" and I saw this place with a line coming out the door. When I pointed that out to Linda she exclaimed "That's it! That's where we will have lunch today or tomorrow! Remember where this is!", so I did. We went there on Friday for lunch, after the visit to Graceland and before the Beale St. Music Festival started.
All I can say is IT WAS WONDERFUL!
It was so good I bought a t-shirt and we went back again on Sunday. I mean, we skipped one of the other joints on the list so we could go there again. That is saying something. We don't normally repeat restaurants much, unless there is either a total dearth of decent places to eat or a place is very special.
Thank goodness for Vytorin, but I felt my extremities getting numb before we left Memphis anyway, so I need to "veg out" a bit before doing this again. That is very hard to do for a carnivore like myself. Linda can deal with "meatless Mondays" and vegetarian burgers and pizzas, but I have a tough time with it, probably much to my downfall...
Anyway, this is one popular eating establishment. There was a slight line when we got there, every table was occupied. It took at least 20 minutes to get seated. By the time we were sitting down, there was about 25 more folks in line. At least Gus doesn't seem to run out of chicken!
My camera was still equipped with the Sigma 10-20mm lens, so I got a few shots inside and one of the outside. I will put as many as I can in the workshop as amplifying photographs. It is somewhat dark in there, but ISO 6400 saves the day to give a somewhat muddy view of things. This upload is done in the true spirit of TrekLens, to learn about photography through our world, so one thing you should take away from this particular shot is not to attempt this at home! I am not afraid to damage my already-questionable reputation as a photographer by uploading sub-standard and bizarre photographs such as this, but you may wish to have your own rep unsullied by such nonsense.
I hope you find this interesting enough to visit Gus's if you ever get to Memphis. I get a quarter for every person that goes there if you mention this upload!
