Side portrait. I call him M, simply. My 2nd Gawai travlogue post features a man from Kampung Semban of Borneo Highlands. In the afternoon we arrived at the village, he was still in town to send his son to airport to represent state team for football match, and to get all the food/goods he needed for the night and next day's celebration. By late afternoon, he carried 50kg payload and trekked 4hrs to reach 3300ft home before dark at 6.30pm [his leg muscles could not stand after reaching home]. A father of 2 and one of the very few young men who chose to stay in the village and look after well being of people. In the 1 day-night stay that I came to silently observe about him, a lot of things I can learn without asking too many questions. M is mid-30s, used to be construction worker but after married, returned to village, built a house for his family by carrying all the materials from town and trekking 4hrs to the village at 3300ft.

Some details about him. A soft guy when it comes to his affection for the 8yr daughter. The 11-yr son [I just saw his photo only] was chosen as football player for the State. 11 months to single-handedly built his own house but I found his latch at toilet is screwed which could not close the door :), so I will buy a new latch for him tomorrow and let him try another time.

The wife calls him King Kong. I saw his body muscles. But he rested early this night at 9pm after dinner, while the wife and daughter went to village party till 3am :) [One of my eyes opened when they opened quietly the main door downstairs, so i knew the time] For record, I went to sleep at 10.30pm and up at 5.45am for sunrise.

This morning after going up the mountain top for sunrise photography and the village for portraits, light traditional breakfast, and while waiting to go to 1hr-trek waterfall, I watched him preparing 2 chickens, 1 duck for tonight's feast. He said 'please dont shoot me' so you see his face turned away from my but still unable to hide his embarrassed shy smile. Below the front balcony of his home. The morning light was strong. Nice haircut.

I have this print ready today [together with 19 other prints of other village shots] and to pass to him tomorrow night when he treks 4hrs out and come into town to pick his son from airport. 2nd time I am to meet M.

Stay tuned to see the village and sunrise soon.

Hello Bill
1 thing i like most here is, the light on his face :)
It looks like that the sun must right top of head which has given very harsh light on his back, but most interesting this is the reflected light from bottom on his face.

Nice capture of shy-man ;)
He'd love to see this one printed (m sure)

hello bill,
what a beautiful portrait!
the light on his face, almost coming from below (like a reflection) highlights his features and makes the little sweat drops shine; his shy smile makes this portrait special.
I like the notes on your trip - you take time to give background information and explain who you photograph and why. I feel like I know a bit more about the people you meet when I see again the photo after reading your notes.
thanks!

Bill, it seems that your amazing portrait of this person was inspired by your personal interaction with him, as your notes describe. That, sometimes, leads to photographic excellence, as long as you did not overstep your boundary of friendship with this person. All in all... Great shot!!

Your character's portrait, M

the smile in your natural lips.

Hi Bill,

Nice portrait. I like the lighting. Even know the light is coming from above, there is something on the ground that return some light in his face and creating a nice glow. Composition is pleasing and shallow DOF looks great. Nice work and TFS.
