I took this shot from Mellons Bay in Howick, Auckland. There are quite a range of beaches out that way, including Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach and Howick Beach – to name a few. It is close by to the township of Howick, and was once separated from Auckland City by farmlands, but is now part of the urban sprawl that is Manukau City.

This beach received its name in the early settler days when the British colonised New Zealand. Upon arriving in Auckland, English pioneers began dividing up land in Howick after the Maori land wars. After confiscating the territory off the Ngati-puna tribe, the English settlers discovered a Maori lady who was European in her features. The English were so amazed by her facial features and physical attributes that they attributed the name of the bay in her honour.

It provides white sand and safe swimming for all the family, in contrast to the black sands of the west coast beaches and wild surf. According to the 2001 census, Mellons Bay has a population of 2,871. It was a nice sunny day when I took this, and there were a few people strolling along the beach. There was also a man with his dog, as seen in the distance.

I visited quite a few beaches in the area on this day, and was surprised how close they are to each other. Each one is uniquely different in their own way, and all have decent parking spots right on the beachfront. There are still quite a few farms in Howick, especially in the Whitford area. With all the attractions out that way, it is easy to make a day trip out of it.

Hi Scott,

A lovely place to be I think....
Wonderful picture with stunning colors and light.
Great composition. I like the reflection of the rock very much!

TFS and greetings from Zealand, Netherlands,
Adri

This is really well captured ...! Stunning saturation, detail, and light. Composition works ok because the headland fits nicely into rule-of-thirds guidelines. Its reflection in the water is so striking.
Good timing - the light was just right for this - a very nice shot.
Rew

Hi Scott,
A fine shot, good clarity and colour, etc, etc. I possibly would alter my POV to change the composition a bit, or crop some of the left of the image. I personally find the headland too central. Anyway, my 2 cents.
All the best,
Phil

Salut Thomas.
Très beau paysage maritime avec de splendides couleurs.
Une image qui invite a la balade.
Merci du partage.
Bonne journée.
Urs

Hi Scott. My compliments for the wonderful compo and amazing contrasted colours. Perfect light. Well done.

Roberto

Hi Scott,

OMG, what a wonderful view. It is really magnificent. The colour of the sea is fantastic and makes great contrast to the green colour of the trees. Composition and sharpness are excellent too.

Maybe time really flies, but the beauty of the nature can never get old.

Enjoy your day,

Stasa

Scottie, you're developing quite a little style of your own!
This is really nice ... colors are fantastic. I love especially the way the light hits the face of that cliff, and its reflection in the water. What a beautiful spot. The people and dog really add to this scene.
Have a good day bud.
Trudy

Hi Scott,

Nice POV to capture the reflection of the cliff in the water below. Very sharp with vivid colors and nice DOF. Time really does fly. Another beautiful composition.

TFS,
Werner

This looks like a paradise!! and the colors are very vibrant. An excellent pov. I could live right on this spot :) TFS

Good morning, Scott!
Beautiful POV at this beach, this is a really pictoresque view. The white cliff stands out very well from the environment of blue sea and blue sky. Sharp and bright image, it reminded me my trip to the Great Ocean Road and Twelve Apostoles in Victoria, Australia. Well done, good job!
TFS.
Best regards,
Kristof

hi Scott,
a very clear view of the nice shore.
white rock wall and its reflection look shining between blue sky and blue sea.
curved calm wave line and distant mild hills make beautiful perspective. walking people and standing trees are good vertical elements in this wide horizontal view.
light and colors are perfect.
thank you,
Akihisa

Hi Scott
wonderful place
special for romantica walkings!!
or not?
good in pov and colours
well taken
have good week end
ciao
Lucio

Hi Scott,
What a superb panoramic view vith excellent POV, colours, light and perspective.TFS.
Cheers,

Hi my friend...
Beautiful shot...
Beautiful view, composition, colors...
Regards...
Andro

Hi Scott,
It's a crisp and clear picture, but a bit too blue in my opinion. The composition is spot on, the people in view show the dimentions of the rocks. The foam of the little wave in the FG creates a fine lead-in too. Well observed and captured.
Hans

Hi Scott,

Stunning beach and well photographed. Nice panorama. Good notes too! Tfs.

Hi Scott,

I live just up from Mellons Bay, & always enjoy capturing shots from there, & the surrounding Howick beaches. Great crispness with the colors...
