[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
"Brachypelma vagans is a species of tarantula known commonly as the Mexican red rump or Mexican black velvet. It ranges predominantly in Mexico, but can be found as far south as Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Florida. They are terrestrial, burrowing spiders. The reason for the name red rump is because of its distinctive red hairs on its abdomen. Like most tarantulas, they will eat anything they can overpower, which is usually insects, but small lizards and rodents may also be consumed. They can grow to a 5 inch leg span, with males typically being smaller and thinner than the females. They prefer scrubland habitats." - Wikipedia

This is my pet Mexican red rump tarantula, Skellinguy. As it is only about 6 months old, it may not be sexed until a year or two from now. But, I have been referring to it as a male for the time being. He can be very easily startled, but otherwise is mellow and slow-moving. Here, he can be seen on the back of my hand.

Post-Production: (in iPhoto) slight increase of exposure, contrast, and sharpness. Vignette, antique, boost color, and fade color effects used. (Resized in Photoshop)

Hi Chanele,
Great shot of your red rump...if you dont mind me saying...we used to keep one of these years ago, called her Morticia. I posted a shot of our old spider Monica a few weeks ago, we dont know what species of Tarantula she is but we do know the sex and she is about 7" now, we took her as a rescue animal. You wont need a macro on this when it is fully grown. Great shot, you have plenty of detail as the focus is spot on, colour great and I like the fading at the corners to. TFS

Wonderfully sharp with lots of details but it still gives me the creeps.
