This shot was taken inside the Gothic Revival St. Nikolai's Church in Hamburg. This church now lies in ruins, serving as a memorial and major landmark of the city.
To learn more about the church and its history follow this link to the English Wikipedia.
Edith Breckwoldt is the artist behind this monument. It is called "Prüfung" which may be translated as "Inquisition" in this case. The artist created it for the memorial of Sandbostel where one of the largest prison camps of the Nazis was. More than 50000 people from many countries died there.
The base is made of red bricks collected on the ground of Sandbostel. They once belonged to the barracks of the prisoners.
Being inside this ruin, seeing this and other monuments makes you feel small. Hopefully people have learned from history.
PP. Changed to b&w, sharpened, adjusted brightness and contrasts, worked with layers to bring out the monument quite better; added frames
Thanks for having a look. I wish all of us a peaceful weekend. Kindest regards, Britta
PS: I did th work on this image when my desk was bathed in sunlight. Now, some hours later, I had a look at the image here on TL and ask myself if the monument is too bright against the background. What do you think? |
