~ Red Canopy ~

The landscaped Cross Hills Gardens cover 18 acres. Rhododendrons and Azaleas abound and there is such variety in growing habit, flower colour/size and foliage that every visitor is assured to be impressed.

The photo I have posted today is of one of the most striking red flowering rhododendrons I have ever seen. The plant towered several meters in height and was covered in early Spring blooms, appearing like a red canopy.

There are also many fine tree specimens including some which are over 100yrs of age. There are now in excess of 2000 species or varieties of rhododendron and azalea planted in these stunning grounds!

These gardens are a great place to visit, stroll around, relax and take in the splendid views across the gardens and beyond to the Ruahine Ranges, Kapiti Island, and Mount Ruapehu. Well worth a visit!

Hi Martyn,
Terrific shot, very striking indeed. I have these in my garden too, except mine are orange. Such photogenic flowers. The desaturation seems to work well, giving full focus on the explosive red colours. Well spotted.

Hi Martyn,

Rhododendrons have very beautiful flowers I have a miniature variety in my garden the flowers are yellow. I like the way that you have desaturated every thing except the flowers it makes for a very striking shot. The details are very sharp good dof and great pov well done.
