White Dunes in De Hoop Heritage. De Hoop Nature Reserve is situated 50 km east of Bredasdorp on the southern Cape coast and comprises 36 000 ha, with an adjacent marine reserve extending 3 nautical miles (5 km) out to sea. De Hoop Nature Reserve includes a large vlei, limestone hills, extensive sand dunes and the Potberg mountain range. De Hoop is important for the conservation of rare lowland fynbos and, of its 1 500 plant species, 50 are endemic to the area.

A typical Mediterranean climate prevails in the region, with mild winters and warm summers. The annual rainfall is about 380 mm and August is usually the wettest month. Weak fogs also occur. The most frequent summer winds are east, west and south-east, while in winter westerly and south-westerly winds prevail.

De hoop Nature Reserve has 86 mammal species, most notably the rare bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, grey rhebuck, baboon, yellow mongoose, caracal and the occasional leopard. Large populations of bats occur on De Hoop. The marine reserve provides a sanctuary for southern right whales, which calve here each year from May to December.

More than 260 species of birds have been recorded at De Hoop Nature Reserve. Potberg has the last remaining breeding colony of the rare Cape vulture in the Western Cape. The De Hoop Vlei is a wetland of international importance for migratory waterbirds. Numerous frogs, snakes, lizards, tortoises and invertebrate species occur in the different habitats of De Hoop, and at least 250 fish species occur in the marine reserve.

Hi Michiel,

Beautiful captured dunes. I realy like the trailmarks wich are visible. Well composed lines!

TFS Greetings Simone

Very striking subject and strong composition. I like the smooth, clean tones.

A note about any post-work would be helpful, from observation it looks like you added sharpening after the resize and it has created some harsh edges, which compromise the shot a little in my opinion.

Great lines in this image that make the composition very strong and pleasing. The light is very nice and the shadows make the image strong. A great example of a simple yet powerful image. TFS

I saw red ones... not so white,

thanks Michiel,

Hello Michiel,

Great image, I like very much the way you capture the colors and the texture of the sand and also the leading line, the edge of the dune, very good composition.

Hi Michiel,
A very interesting shot. I think a bit more of the sky on the top would have helped the composition.
