Ok – this is an old shot but all about PP work.

There are plenty of shots I’ve taken that are “almost but not quite.” This was one such example. The pose was cute, the expression was fun, but my composition was atrocious – I had cut off a hand!

Recently, revisiting some of my old files, I discovered a similar (but equally unsuccessful) pose with the hand in view, and realised that I might be able to repair my missed opportunity.

So the workflow went something like this:

The Hand:
- Opened base image. Extended canvas to the left, background white
- Opened second image with complete hand. Used rectangular marquee to select her hand and part of the sleeve. Copied.
- Pasted hand image into the main shot. Reduced opacity of the pasted layer to 50% so I could still see what was beneath.
- Used ‘transform’ tool to rotate, adjust scale, and reposition the pasted hand until it was the right size and in the right place, using her bracelet as reference point. Set transformation.
- Returned opacity to 100%. Applied Layer Masking, ‘hide all,’ then slowly began to paint over the layer mask with the white brush to reveal the copied hand.
- Flattened image. A full-size image of the repaired hand is viewable here.

Background:
- Used ‘select color’ option; clicked on background so that all background areas were selected.
- Dupliicated to a new layer, clicked on ‘layer mask’ option so that only the selected areas were revealed.
- Adjusted levels to lighten/whiten background to the desired point.
- Flattened image.

Finishing touches:
- used clone tool at 50% opacity/ 50% flow to slightly soften the hard shadow by her left breast.
- Sharpened, cropped, resized.

--

Lighting at the time was my old halogen setup, used a tripod and remote to trigger the shot.

HI REW,
i could do the pp work but not the photography. taking people is still a mine field for me. your notes are very helpful.

i must practice more if i want to get close to this level.

nicely done.
Brian.

ps.
i did a little ws. hope you don't mind?

Hi Rew,

To me, this shot got everything to be a good one.
I do like the pose, the crop, the angle which you've choosen to shoot it, and also what the model transpire (the expression).

Good lighting with open shadows. I do detect tho, a bluish cast..))) At this point I'm saying, it's probably by choice.

Let me offer you one studio tip, that I've learn thru my college year.

When shooting on a white seemless, the light is being reflected back up on the model, which makes the bottom part a little lighter that it should. As you can tell, the black shoes, do look a little more dark grey, the black.

A little burning of the bottom can easily fix this. Cheers and have a good day.

Nice job with PP
like the expression and pose
well done TFS

Great great great work!
The description of the work is perfect: a tutorial!!!

Ladies and gentlemen.... this is a great example of an honest girl and an honest photographer! Firstly this is a fun and energetic portrait filled with attitude! I just love her expression here.

Secondly, the photographer has gone through so much trouble to explain every step of the painstaking process of restoration and in the process has shared invaluable knowledge with the techniques described here. Thank you very much for this awesome presentation and workshop tutorial on advanced photo shop techniques. Cheers Rew.

Regards,

Dilshan

Excellent shot Rew, post processing is flawless, I'd not have known if not mentioned.. not sure of the cause but the edges look a little bit jagged, nevertheless it is one of your fine works.. thanks

Wow! A great work you have done here. Yes, she is pretty and I like her pose and the cute facial expression. I like the transparency of her long sleeve blouse. Amazing you could add the previous missing hand. Looks perfect in that white background and you could keep her boots´s shadow. So she loves shoes, bags and boys.... ha, ha, ha, very normal girl. Congratulations in this excellent photo. Saludos,

Lorena

Nice shot and great pose from the model. Love the wording on her singlet.

Fantastic notes, thanks.

Olá Rew,
Nice photo, nice white BC and, the last, etca., beautful Sophia! Great shot and PPW.
Second, many thanks for the excellent lesson about PPW.
Cordialmente,
Raimundo

Hi Rew - love the sultry pose here!! Actually I think that the colour cast is ok (at least on my monitor)

Good lighting - even and no shadows and good PP work on the BG. I do like that you've left a bit of shadow around her legs or else it would look too unnatural..

Clear, sharp and sultry!!

David

HI Rew...good work piecing this shot together. The composition looks perfect....

Rew...what should I get for simple studio lighting...I have two umbrella lights that are rather small and a flash unit (580)...what would you suggest for portraits? Please reply to rminkow@aol.com.

Thanks

Roger

Hi Rew,
This PP work really makes the photo not only better, but wonderful. i love the result.

Good choice to use what she wears and how she poses.

The lettering was the first thing that i look at in this picture, so eye-catching :)

Thanks for the note.

Yopie

Hello Rew

Good pp work that has salvaged this image. I like the high key toned bg, which enhances the graphism. Excellent sharpness & posture of the model. Tfs!

Hello Rew,

Excellent portrait of Sophia and excellent PP work.
I like this cute pose and white background.

Best regards,
Tatjana

Hi Rew,
I thought I read "I love Shoes, Fags and Boys" on her T-shirt, but it must be "Bags" isn't it? :-)
Anyway the special pose of your model looks funny and professional together. Your note is perfect, excellent information for the photographer who is interested in studio photography. The image itself: well don't need much words for that: excellent!

Shoes, bags and boys
Love it... the phrase on the t-shirt, the look and pose, and your pp work.
Thanks for all the info Rew - still looks too hard for me. But we have learnt a bit over the years, haven't we????
And your portraits have certainly improved a lot.
Cheers
Janice

Very eye-catching! Cute pose, colors and expression. (I feel guilty making such picky comments, but here I go.) Lighting and all is very good - we can see the wrinkles in the sheet on the floor though. And I wish her head were tipped up a little more - the bangs over her left eye are keeping us from getting a good sense of her eyes and any expression there. Black hair is all one tone - like a black helmet. And last of all, it bugs me that her t-shirt is "buckled" and hard to read. There's something above the line of her jeans that might be cloned out for cleanliness' sake. With all that in mind, I'll just say, it's easy to criticize. I couldn't do one quarter as well! :D

Hi Rew,
Great shot, the pose and PoV are great and as you have corrected the flaw in the image and picked up lots of learning from TL not much more to be said apart from great notes and TFS!

I'll bet you never thought this shot would make a comeback. The detailed PP was worth the effort - transformed a reject into an excellent image.
Thanks for the detailed explanation of the PP.

Hello Rew

Strong white bg .. I'm jealous ! lol
Excellent and funny portrait, I especially like Sophia's mood.

Centered and clever work. Amazing colors contrast too.
I love the tee shirt..... I want the same !

Perfect details.
Well done Rew
Best regards

Beau travail de restauration, Rew! Le miracle de la photo c'est aussi cela , quand on est assez habile pour le faire.

I prefer the B version, just because the skin tones look better in that one as opposed to this one. However the third version shows more shadow detail in the jeans which is also better so I would have applied that same shadow/curve adjustment and brushed the jeans through. The jeans look made to measure in this and the shape of the cardigan looks pleasing to the eye. I think Rew you might have cleaned up a bit more of her stomach (must be stomach hairs - and I know we all have them but in the modelling and retouching, clients would want these removed perhaps). Apart from that its very professional looking.
Regards
Jim

Hi Rew,
Great shoot, what i really like is the white balance, because you were using halogen lights.
