Dear colleagues, today I wish, finally give you a picture about the colors of autumn.

This picture I made it to Kahlenberg in Vienna.

Kahlenberg is a mountain (484 m/1,588 ft) located in the 19th District within Vienna, Austria.

Unfortunately the weather was not very great, but ... I tried to get some pictures acceptable.


The "brothers" on the Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg north west edge of Vienna are probably the most well-known surveys of the Vienna Woods, since one of them from the federal capital itself largely beneath him underneath the "beautiful blue Danube" Hainburger direction Porte and the Hungarian plain and the distance loom the Schneeberg sees. Moreover, both have served as the alpine bulwark against the Turks, and have a number of other historic landmarks. Sure, Bald Mountain and Leopold are easily accessible by car, but if you take them through one of the many hiking trails, especially the Nasenweg, approaches, approaches the nature and the self-Vienna ...

Kahlenberg lies in the Wienerwald (Vienna forest) and is one of the most popular destinations for day-trips from Vienna, offering a view over the entire city. Parts of Lower Austria can also be seen from Stefaniewarte at the peak. Next to Stefaniewarte is a 165-meter high steel tower that serves as the transmitter for the ORF, the Austrian Broadcast Corporation. Two terraces are located on the mountain: one at a small church called St. Josef and one at a restaurant built in the 1930s by architect Erich Boltenstern. Parts of the restaurant and a nearby abandoned hotel have been torn down and replaced by a modern restaurant. The demolition was opposed by the local historical society and by some architects who believed the building was worth protecting. There is also a spiritual recovery center and a center for a Catholic reform movement, the Schönstattbewegung Österreich.

Kahlenberg is 484 meters high and lies in the northeastern foothills of the Eastern Alps. The mountain is mostly flysch, which is composed of quartz, limestone, marl, and other conglomerates. West of Kahlenberg is Leopoldsberg; and to the east is Reisenberg, Latisberg, and Hermannskogel.

Kahlenberg was uninhabited until the 1700s. Originally, the mountain was called Sauberg (sow mountain) or Schweinsberg (pig mountain), after the numerous wild pigs that lived in the pristine oak forests. In 1628, Ferdinand II acquired the mountain from the Klosterneuburg monastery and called it Josephsberg (Joseph's Mountain). Only after Emperor Leopold I renamed the original Kahlenberg (the neighbouring mountain) to Leopoldsberg was the name "Kahlenberg" given to the "Josephsberg".

After acquiring the mountain, Ferdinand II allowed a hermitage for the Kamaldulenser, an order of Catholic hermits, to be built. A few houses were built around the Chapel of Saint Joseph, which earned the name Josefsdorf. Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland launched his attack on the Turkish forces during the second siege of Vienna from here .

The mountain is also notable as the place where Albert Einstein, Otto Neurath, and other mathematicians and physicists made the first plans, around 1920, for what would later become the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science.

Kahlenberg can be reached by car or by bus (Bus line 38A) via the picturesque Höhenstraße, part of which is cobblestone. The first Austrian cog railway was built to Kahlenberg in 1872 and 1873 and opened in 1874. It was designed by Carl Maader. The track climbed 316 meters over 5.5 km and started from the train station in Nußdorf (today the end station of the tram-line D) and connected through Grinzing and Krapfenwaldl to the Kahlenberg Hotel, which opened in 1872. An average of 180,000 passengers used the train line each year. After World War I, the Vienna municipality converted the trams to electric power. The surrounding citizens had already dismantled large parts of the track during the war. On September 21, 1920, the line was finally shut down.

Hi Adrian

Overall this image is quite pleasing on the eye in terms of sharpness and composition, however, I feel, given that this was taken with a Canon 450D, the colours are so muted. To title the image "Colours of Autumn" is a little decieving, these colours should be jumping out and hitting the viewer smack between the eyes. A liitle tweeking of levels and saturation in Photoshop would address the problem. If you have no access to Photoshop any free or inexpensive software will also do similar processes. I still like the image and feel it would be greatly improved with just a few minor tweaks.

Hello Adrian,

The pov, looking down on the scene, is very pleasing as it wis easy to gain an overview of the whole area. The focal building is well positioned in the frame and nestles nicely amongst the colours. However, like Dean, I felt the colours should be leaping off the monitor and they weren't.

I have done a little w/s to help lift the colours which I hope you will like.

The soft light created a nice mood in this shot Adrian plus the factor that you composed nicely the scene with proper placement of elements. Well seen and well captured.

Looking down into the shot is an extremely pleasing scene with the muted tones of fall once they have passed their peakwith the sharp colors
I can see why others think this should be brighter but living in a valley where there is often mist, this is what we get and I think you did a great job.

The landscape and the composition is great. The colors aren't really that good, thats a pity. I've seen the workshops and they are all 'special' but not natural. The note is a bit "too much" for me.
But, all in all, it IS a great photo !

Hi Adrian,
Your choice of POV,gives us quite an area to view.I'm guessing those are orchards surrounding the farm houses?& I wonder what the cleared area behind the houses is used for?
Your Autumn colours are similar to ours in Western Canada,this area must be very scenic at this time of year.As you say ,the weather was not the brightest & the colours of the foliage reflect that,but I wonder if a higher ISO may have helped?
Good choice for this Theme.

Hi Adrian,

The diagonal line of the road is an asset to the composition. The point of view from the top of the hill toward the houses and tyoward the field is giving depth to the photo. The trees are framing well the houses and the road. The late morning light has a good effect on the colors. have a nice day.

Toate cele 4 variante din WS imi plac (facute de cei 4 membrii TL), dar nu pot sa zic ca versiunea originala, adica cea facuta de tine, e mai prejos.
Fiecare cu punctul lui de vedere. Se vede ca esti urmarit, de aceea ai si primit atit de multe WS-uri.
Super perspectiva si frumoase culori ale toamnei!
